I currently maintain unofficial builds for Kinoite and it would be awesome if we could make it official!

There might be some changes required in the Silverblue build pipeline or we might have to create a new pipeline to make this work. I am not very familiar with how Silverblue builds are done.

This sounds very interesting. Once the technical hurdles are resolved, it could make sense to have some kind of meeting to see what new opportunities this would bring. What do you think?

Per the KDE SIG meeting today, our long-term goal here is to have Kinoite as an Edition similar to Silverblue.

The steps we need to get there:

1. Plasma Discover support for OS updates for RPM-OSTree
2. Simplifying the package set between KDE Spin and Kinoite to reduce the delta
3. Adding Kinoite to the compose pipeline for Fedora releases and Rawhide

To note, there's a Season of KDE 2021 idea for implementing an RPM-OSTree backend for Plasma Discover. It looks like @apol and @siosm will co-mentor anyone interested in doing this as part of SoK. Alternatively, we can do this as a Fedora GSoC 2021 item with an interested student.

We've discussed this today and decided to start the process to get this landing for Fedora 35. This is contingent on getting a compose pipeline for it and getting Discover working for RPM-OSTree system updates.

Thanks to @michaeltunnell, I found out that "Kinoite" is a wonderful pun for us, as in Japanese "木のいて" (pronounced as KEY-no-EE-tay), it means "There is a tree". As this is based on RPM-OSTree, this works out quite well!

Now I'm not sure which pronunciation I want. :laughing:

Like it too! Maybe we don't have to choose and can keep both :smile:

If it's of any help, the japanese pronunciation should be much more natural to latin-based languages speakers.
