#39 Gathering project ideas for GSoC 2021
Closed: Fixed a year ago by justinz. Opened 3 years ago by rachittshah.

Hello Fedora Community!

I'm Rachitt Shah, and I reside in India. I made the switch to Linux about a
year ago,and I love to explore new distros. I run Fedora Workstation as my
main OS,and I'm trying to build my own kernel from scratch as well.

I recently tried KDE Spin and I really liked it.

I have been a contributor at KDE for their Season of KDE 2021 under the
Calamares installer where I contribute to the docs, and I help new open sources to find projects via http://swoc.tech/ and I lead the dev and docs teams at https://canvasboard.live/home

I would read the wiki/docs about the various projects and try to get started. I am also trying to discover ideas as well.

I am looking for projects to contribute to for GSoC and beyond GSoC as well.

Glad to be here!

Renamed the issue to make it a central place to gather project idea for GSoC 2021.

We had the following existing suggestions:

  • Work on plasma-firewall to improve firewalld support
  • Work on network-manager applet to improve NetworkManager integration especially regarding WiFi setup and firewalld network zones
  • Continue the work on rpm-ostree and Flatpak integration in Discover for Kinoite

Probably other suggestions:

  • Add offline system upgrade to new Fedora versions to Discover
  • Add + enable third-party repositories for things like nvidia driver, etc.

I proposed this one as part of KDE GSoC.

Thank you for sharing the ideas @siosm , @ngompa and @jgrulich !

I would explore them and get back on the IRC if I have any questions.

Hey @siosm @ngompa , I had a small request, can you please add any specific skills needed and difficulty levels of the projects? It would serve as an pointer while trying to learn more about them.

Thanks!

So as potential GSoC projects, they should all be accessible to new comers to KDE/Fedora so I don't think we can distinguish between them in terms of difficulty. Skill wise, expect C++/Qt/QML/CMake/Git.

Understood.

Thank you for sharing. Would keep reading about the project ideas mentioned above.

Closing as GSoC 2021 is well and truly over. Of course, anyone is welcome to carry over any new ideas into a new GSoC 2023 thread if interested.
