#325 Removing Kwrite from preinstalled apps on Kinoite
Closed: Won't fix a year ago by marcdeop. Opened a year ago by boredsquirrel.

Kinoites set of KDE apps has KWrite included, which as far as I know by definition is a small part of Kate.

As Kate is preinstalled anyways (which could be considered bloat if you dont use it, but I like it), why not remove KWrite?

It is not that easy to switch away from KWrite, as there is no "default text editor" setting in KDE.

So its one of the few apps i override remove, which I would rather not need to do.

Why not removing Kate instead?

Kwrite < Kate

The only disadvantage of Kate is that its bigger and maybe slower. But its a really good Editor. Kwrite is minimal.

Removing Kate could make sense, yes, but as an RPM it has more privileges which is very useful.

Kate is not part of Kinoite, only KWrite is. I myself would vote for Kate instead, but that's a personal preference and I can install it myself when needed, on the otherhand I believe KWrite will work just fine for majority of the users.

@jgrulich I installed Kinoite fresh and Kate was included?

Closing as there isn't a strong argument for kate over kwrite.

I dont get it? I installed Kinoite fresh and Kate was included. On my own install I need to layer it.

Kate is a very good editor, and layering should be avoided.

It has support for syntax highlighting, previews, compiling, and much more, but it can replace Kwrite in its normal functionality in every way.

Your only argument for any change here is your personal preference. There is nothing to discuss then.

If you don't want to use layering, use flatpak which is the recommended way of installing apps like Kate in Kinoite

Due to dependencies changes, Kate is sometimes included in Kinoite by mistake.

and layering should be avoided.

Layering is fine if Flatpaks don't work for a use case.

We have kwrite by default because we must have a default basic text editor in the base image at all time for users to be able to edit configuration files / debug their systems without a terminal.
