#243 Fedora 38 Change: Remove initial-setup (anaconda)
Closed: Fixed a year ago by siosm. Opened 2 years ago by siosm.

Submit a change to remove initial-setup (from anaconda) from the KDE Spin & Kinoite as it's currently unused there and causes issues.

The end goal is to replace it by something else once the alternative is ready.

We can not fully remove it from comps, netinstall & aarch disk images as that would likely break the first boot experience there.

I wrote https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/KDERemoveInitialSetup. Reviews and comments appreciated. Will submit at the end of the week.

I'd rather we don't use Calamares. It's a nitpick but I really like that Fedora uses Anaconda for all variants unlike e.g. Ubuntu where you get Ubiquity for the standard GNOME version and Calamares for some other variants. One standard install experience for all variants is a good thing in my opinion.

We would not be using Calamares for the installation part, only for the first boot part. Anaconda will still be used for the installation.

In that case I'd much prefer something that fits in with Plasma. Whilst Calamares is built in Qt, it doesn't match the look-and-feel of Plasma. Pico Wizard seems like the best choice so far.

I don't want to use Calamares either, for that reason and because I maintain Calamares mostly for Fedora derivatives to have an option other than Anaconda.

This has been accepted so we can start doing it in Rawhide for F38: https://pagure.io/fesco/issue/2904

This is now done for Kinoite. We then need to figure out the cases where we can remove it in the KDE Spin without breaking things.

I'm reverting the change for F37 as it removes too many packages to be safe for a stable release: https://pagure.io/workstation-ostree-config/pull-request/331

See https://github.com/fedora-silverblue/issue-tracker/issues/393 for the list of removed packages and potentially missing deps in other packages or comps groups.
