#125 KDE semi-broken on silverblue->kinoite rebase
Closed: Duplicate 2 years ago by siosm. Opened 2 years ago by trirad.

I just rebased from fedora:fedora/34/silverblue to fedora:fedora/35/kinoite. I can open Konsole and most flatpaks I had installed. For apps which are missing I try to search for them (Win+search term), when they are absent and I click "Get X..." I get an error pop-up "Error — KIO Client - appstream://fqdn - OK"

The following is missing/broken:

  • Discover (software centre)
  • System Settings (I can click the "Configure" button on all aps and open their respective settings, even "Configure System Tray")
  • Firefox (can be run as a command to open firefox, but no "app")
  • Apps in Task Manager (taskbar is barren, initially 4 none-icons giving "Unkown app" on clicking, "preferred://browser" etc.)

The short answer is that this is untested. I'll see if I can reproduce it.

I was expecting some difficulty. Hoping to help during beta release :)

To expand on my previous answer: rebasing from Silverblue to Kinoite should work but this is not something we test regularly so issues can come up.

I would also suggest trying rebasing from Silverblue 34 to Silverblue 35 first and then rebasing from Silverblue 35 to Kinoite 35.

After playing around in this setup longer, it seems everything from KDE is installed. It just seems like the start and krunner can't find it.

I'm gonna try rebasing first to silverblue 35 and then to kinoite 35.

I think you are having this issue: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/missing-icons-in-kinoite/28335

Unfortunately I have been unable to find the exact source of the issue and why this only happens from time to time. I've field a bug upstream with my findings so far: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=442011

So, I tried to rebase silverblue/34 -> silverblue/35 -> kinoite/35 -> kinoite/rawhide

In neither kinoite/35 nor kinoite/rawhide can I run programs from the start menu. The issues you linked don't seem to apply. Here is the output from launching Discover and Dolphin from the command line:

[me@fedora ~]$ plasma-discover
kf.kirigami: Units.devicePixelRatio is deprecated (since 5.86 ): This returns 1 when using Qt HiDPI scaling.
QDBusArgument: write from a read-only object

Searching for the .desktop entries on the system (are the .desktop entries even available?):

Is your timezone UTC or GMT+00:00? Happens to me and other people as well on a fresh installation of Kinoite. Seems to affect only people on that timezone.

Works when timezone is set to something else that's not Europe/London in my case, but breaks everything again when I set my timezone to Europe/London and I do a system update.

I have created #130 in case the timezone one is a different issue
