#11 Replace Middle Click Paste on Desktop with Application Launcher
Closed: Deferred to upstream by ngompa. Opened by michaeltunnell.

This is an annoyance to many people because a sticky note they didn't want all the sudden shows up on their desktop. I have had people ask me how to get rid of this issue on multiple occasions. (happens on the panels as well too but now its impossible to fix that issue)

This Middle Click on Desktop feature could be awesome though, replace pasting with the quick application menu.

The quick launch menu provides an exploratory "oh that's cool" instead of "what is this, how do I remove this note thing" reaction.

Additionally, If this were done then I think the Application Menu should be adjusted to display the Application Names not the descriptions as described in https://pagure.io/fedora-kde/SIG/issue/10

+1 on this, I hate the middle-click paste.

I'm reopening this because I think we should do this for Fedora 44.

The middle click paste functionality is weird and has odd side effects (like depending on where you attempt to middle click, application-level middle click is ignored for this).

It's a fairly discoverable toggle to turn back on, so I don't think it's that bad to switch off in Fedora. We can promote it to Plasma upstream later.

I dunno about making it an application menu thing, as it's not a feature I would use, but at least here on Kalpa, middle click on the desktop just does nothing Which I only discovered, when I checked after seeing this thread.

Shows how much I pay attention.

That being said, I don't use, or like middle-click paste, and have been disabling it in whatever desktop I use, since well before switching to Wayland for my daily use.

And it's just going to be confusing to any new users, coming from Windows/MacOS as from my recollection, middle-click on the desktop does nothing there either, and it's simple enough for folks that do find value in the behavior, to re-enable it.

I agree. Heck I didn't even know Middle-click does paste... never used it. It's not a thing in Windows or mac AFAIK. I honestly wouldn't bother.

I'm not sure if we'd do the application menu thing, that may be a separate point to discuss.

I have an issue with "It's a fairly discoverable toggle to turn back on"
It's not under the mouse section or "general behavior, which is where I would expect it.

Personally, I am against this.
1 - It is muscle memory for me. Yes, it does pick the wrong thing occasionally nowdays. But it saves me time when it does the right thing.
2 - If you didn't know about it, it does no harm.
3 - If it's so easy to turn back on and/or change, then why are people asking to have it turned off?

p.s. While we are on the subject, how do you manually change this?

The middle-click to get a sticky note? Right click on the desktop, select "Desktop and Wallpaper" and select "Mouse Actions" in the left panel.

Of course. Why would it be in the mouse portion of the system settings. sigh

And the middle button isn't listed there, at least for me. I can add it, but the whole location and how to change it isn't intuitive and doesn't follow the other KDE settings.
I think if we do this change, we need to file some upstream bugs to make changing this easier for the average person.

Wait, I just barely saw the graphics that went with the original request.
Do other people really get a sticky note pop up when they click on the middle button?
I don't. I just tested on a fresh install, and they don't either.

The sticky note thing was an issue when it was filed, but indeed that is gone now.

Middle click paste is under General Behavior. You can also find it by searching for "paste" in System Settings:

Yep. Sorry, I missed that, and I even looked in that section.

So, while I am against changing that from what is set upstream. If we do deviate (or get it changed upstream) I am more in favor of having that be off by default, rather than change it to something completely different.
My muscle memory will continue to do a middle click, and if it does nothing, that's ok. But if it pulls up a menu of things that I might accidentally click or hit, that would be very annoying.

To be clear, the only thing I actually want to do is switch off middle click paste by default. The other stuff is a separate conversation.

Lemme ask you then, and I'll actually parallel @tdawson 's thoughts on the matter:

What is the upstream setting by default? Let's just do that. We pride ourselves in providing a "As much as possible" default KDE experience.

The upstream setting is to have it on by default, but KDE is open to reconsidering based on what happens with downstreams.

In many respects, Fedora is often the leader to new KDE defaults, so it's worth considering.

I'm of the thought that it should just do nothing by default. It's the same in Windows and Mac (As far as I know).

So I think it's important that we define what we're talking about here, because the issue is a little confused at this point.

The origin of this ticket had to do with the behavior of middle-click on the desktop, and what happens when you do it.

It appears, that upstream now doesn't bind middle-click to do anything when you middle-click on a bare desktop (on the wallpaper, to simplify)

Middle-click in an application, is a seperate issue, and in many applications, it pastes text, sometimes from a buffer somewhere that is unpredictable.

So just for clarities sake, do we want to split this ticket, as we're technically talking about two different things?

Yeah, let's split the ticket. @sfaulken do you want to create the new one?

Done, middle-click-paste discussion at https://pagure.io/fedora-kde/SIG/issue/681

Alright, I'm closing this as deferred upstream again, as that was the original state and it was fixed long ago.
