#88 Welcome to the Fedora project @kashylupah

Welcome

Hello kashylupah! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hi everyone! My name is Isaac Karanja, and I’m excited to be part of the Fedora community!

I'm a software developer and cybersecurity enthusiast based in Kenya. I have a growing interest in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and I'm thrilled to contribute and learn from a global, collaborative ecosystem like Fedora.

My key areas of interest include:

Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking (continuing to learn more new things)

Linux systems and server administration

Python programming

Web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Python frameworks)

Community support and digital outreach

I've worked on several tech-related projects, including a hotel menu and ordering system, and I’m currently building a house booking platform for students. I'm also exploring network analysis with Wireshark, penetration testing (web, mobile, Wi-Fi), and SSH/VPN automation.

How I Learned About Fedora
I learned about Fedora through a mix of online research, Linux forums, and recommendations from an active Fedora cintributer The project's commitment to freedom, innovation, and community involvement really stood out to me.

Experience with FOSS
This is my first time actively participating in a FOSS community, but I've been a long-time user of open-source tools like Kali Linux, Wireshark, Metasploit, Inkscape, and Git. I'm eager to transition from user to contributor.

My Place in the FOSS Community
I see myself learning by doing — starting small with documentation, community support, or testing, and eventually contributing to development, packaging, or security testing. I’m also interested in spreading awareness of FOSS in my local community.

Technical Background

OS: I use GNU/Linux (Fedora and Kali Linux) as my main operating systems.

Languages: Python, HTML/CSS, basic JavaScript, and Bash scripting.

Dev Tools: Git, VS Code, command line tools, Burp Suite, Nmap.

Design Tools: Some experience with Inkscape, Canva, and video editing tools.

Other skills: Penetration testing, network analysis, SSH/VPN setup, basic sysadmin tasks.

Communication Platforms

I've used mailing lists, forums (like Stack Overflow and Reddit), and I’m comfortable with platforms like Telegram, Discord, and Matrix.

I haven’t moderated communities yet, but I’d love to help in the future.

Availability
I can dedicate around 5–10 hours per week to volunteering, depending on my university schedule and project load.

Looking Forward
I'm really looking forward to getting involved and contributing to Fedora. If there’s a specific area where newcomers are encouraged to start, I’d love a pointer. Thanks again for the warm welcome!

If anyone here is into cybersecurity or Linux-based development, feel free to connect — I’d love to collaborate or learn from your experience.

Best regards,
Isaac Karanja

Hi Isaac,
That is an awesome set of skills=2E
There is a Security SIG (special interest group)=2E
You could also just start 'testing' various aspects of Fedora and report y=
our findings=2E

Jump into any groups, ask as many questions as you want=2E

There is a new system for Git with Fedora being adopted soon 'Forgejo' tha=
t could likely use some 'testing'

Nice to meet you,
MatH
