Hello @alleych! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
(This is a copy of what I sent to the mailing list)
Hi Everyone,
I am really excited to be here! I have a variety of different interests, I enjoy programming in languages like Python, Java, and most recently, I have been learning Vala. Gnome is the first FOSS community I really got involved in, specifically with the development of the Vala programming language. Other than that, I'm very new to FOSS. I've looked around a little and found Fedora's infrastructure to be really interesting.
Although I don't use Fedora as my main OS, I'm debating whether to switch, I use Fedora as my main distro. I'm comfortable using GIT, command line tools, and many other things. I've also used GIMP because I took Game Programming in college which allowed me to design 2D assets.
I usually use Discord to chat, but honestly, anything is good for me to use. Recently got into using Matrix cause Gnome uses it. I learned about the Fedora project when I was in school learning about Linux and Unix operating systems (I was using Centos at that time).
I'm able to volunteer 10 hours a week. I want to gain experience and contribute to meaningful projects.
That’s a really solid intro — we’re lucky to have you joining us!
You’ve got a strong background already. Fedora’s infrastructure team is definitely an exciting space, though it can take a bit of time to get into due to the high-trust nature of the work. But don’t worry - all the other areas (docs, design, development, etc.) are very open and welcoming. We’ll help you find a good starting point based on what interests you most.
Feel free to drop any questions in the Matrix room - folks are super responsive there.
I’m involved with the DEI team and Fedora Join SIG, so feel free to tag me anytime at @lochipi:matrix.org
Regards Cornelius
Thank you.
Understandable, I'll definitely put time and communicate with the infra team! Docs and Development seem the most interesting to me at this moment. I also saw something about Fedora games that made my eyes light up.
