#65 Welcome to Fedora @lvilaca16

Welcome

Hello @lvilaca16! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hi everyone!

I'm Luís. I am a PhD student working in Machine Learning, and I'm new to the Fedora Community and contributing to open-source software in general. I've been using GNU/Linux since 2014, while Fedora has been my daily driver for the last four. I believe it's time to start giving back to the community and learn with the process!

I've read the documentation described in this issue and believe I can help with bug testing, documentation, and even package maintenance. In general, I mostly tend towards the infrastructure team. However, I am open to your comments, advice and guidance.

I have experience with C++, Python and PHP. Despite working in Machine Learning, which makes me use Python (and a bit of shell scripting) in my day-to-day life, I come from an ECE background, acquiring skills in computer architecture and networks, system administration and what I enjoy the most, problem-solving. Although, I tend to zone out when I am troubleshooting an issue and finding a solution (I'm still dealing with this)

I have experience with version control, namely Git. I am comfortable with cherry-picking, rebasing, etc. To give you just a small example, more recently, I developed and maintained an infrastructure in my research institute to allow researchers to have access to centralized computational resources for their ML-based experiments, so I was in contact with HPC systems, virtualization technologies, e.g. Docker, and IaC/S software, e.g. Ansible and OpenStack. This project was entirely automated using Gitlab's CI/CD mechanisms to generate new Docker images and push changes into production automatically. So, I am also comfortable with CI/CD.

I've attended conferences, guided master students, gave lectures and workshops. Thus, depending on the workload, I could also help with outreach and campaigning.

I enjoy multimedia, especially photography, although I'm not skilled at photo editing. I like focusing on composition and using my camera to express my ideas through photos. I also enjoy cinema. In my city, we have theatres that show independent films, often featuring sessions with the producers. In a nutshell, I like multimedia, so I would also like to help with related projects within Fedora.

I work and study simultaneously but can contribute 2-3 hours a week, depending on my workload.

I'm also comfortable with mailing lists, but my preferred means of communication is Matrix.

Nice to meet you all!
Luís

That is a fantastic introduction and we are lucky to have you here.
Sometimes I post some of my photos from getting out and about in Australia on Matrix at #social:fedoraproject.org

All the areas you are interested in are readily accessible, except infrastructure which takes some time to get in to. Ask for directions to any on the areas you have mentioned and we will direct you there.

Great to meet you,
Mat
