Hello @plasticmae! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
Hello! My name is Mae and I use she/her pronouns. I've been using various Linux distros for a good part of my life and I've attempted to contribute before but was unable to for one reason or another. I have made personal packages for several distros though, though never an rpm. I use several distros but I use fedora on my main laptop. I have some writing experience as well as some experience in python, rust, and C#. I'm very comfortable with the command line and tools like git. I've used mailing lists before but not participated as much as I'd like. I've also used irc and matrix before. I can likely spend 10 hours consistently a week contributing.
Oh whoops! I didn't see the "on the list part," I'll do that!
Is there a post approval process for the mailing list? I sent my introduction but it wasn't posted to the mailing list archive so I think I did it wrong?
One needs to subscribe to the list before posting there. Have you subscribed to it yet? (Unless a mailing list is "moderated" all subscribers can post to it. Moderated lists require a moderator to approve posts, but the join mailing list is not moderated.)
Oh thanks! I had my email set up incorrectly.

Hi Mae, Thanks for the introduction. Do you know about the COPR repos, where users can add their own programs? https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/ We also have a new Git sytem coming up that you might like to familiarise yourself with https://fedoramagazine.org/fedora-moves-towards-forgejo-a-unified-decision/ Writing AND coding are great skills to go hand in hand. We need help at Fedora on the documentation side of things - it is such an undervalued area.
If you have had a look around Fedora, is there any area that we could help you connect with? Or anything you would like to ask?
Regards, Mat
