Welcome

Hello @arkit21! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hi Everyone,
I am glad to be in the community, I am sorry it took so long to respond to the ticket.
Here are a few key details about me.

Experience with FOSS

  • Nope, this is my first time being in any FOSS. I have used FOSS software and I thought it might be a good idea to take a look behind the curtain, to see how everything works.
  • I definitely would like to explore package management for Fedora, it seems worth exploring to contribute and to learn as well along the way

Background

  • I am an introvert and I never explored anything on the internet. So, kinda out of any community development or journalism.
  • I have dual booted Windows 10 with Fedora. I suffered for a year with distro-hoping syndrome due to which my grades suffered  that's why just to cure myself of the syndrome I settled on Windows.
  • I am aiming to build some Android application and for that I have been learning Kotlin from a book, the experience of learning programming from a book is new, but I think it's worth it. I do aim for cross-platform app development as well in the future, but for now it's Android.
  • I have spent a lot of time in flashing custom ROMs on my Android, which for some reason is something I find passionate, and I think it's a testament to the nature of open source where developers are able to create their own Android Experience and tinkerers like me are able to install them.
  • I too am reading the book "How Linux Works" to understand the penguin a little better.

Communication Platform

  • I barely text to other people, but I frequently use Matrix and have joined Fedora's room
  • I haven't used mailing list before, and I was a little anxious to use mailing list to introduce myself
  • No experience with moderating

Volunteering Time

  • It's too early for me to say anything because from today I have started spending 3hrs to learn package management and once I feel comfortable, I will update it here.

Overall I just want to say, I am blown away as to how everything works, and it's amazing how things work here, I have never seen something like this and I really am looking forward to contributing to package management. It's just that my main reason to even dive into Fedora's contribution is that I can learn about package management and in return, I can contribute back to Fedora

Hi @arkit21 , no worries at all. There's no hurry/time limit. Please do take your time.

If there's anything we can help with, please do let us know. I think the package management docs are fairly good, but if you do find issues, please do file them and that'll help us improve them further. The fedora-devel channel/room on Matrix is where the package maintainers hang out. So that's worth joining too---you can ask any queries etc. there and folks will help you out.

As a final note---everyone is welcome in Fedora. We have folks who are more social and like to talk to everyone regularly and at the same time we also have folks who like to keep to themselves more. It's all good :)

Hi Arkit,
Introverts make great contributors to open source :)
We are here though if you do want to ask anything at all.
Sorry we did not check in with you sooner.

Do you know about https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/ where you can package your own stuff?

Feel free to aks us anything you want.

Regards,
Mat
