Hello @archaeologicalphonewires ! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
I'm very glad to have had a prompt for this. I'm not typically the best at introducing myself, but can be (debatably) more interesting as you get to know me.
I'm fairly new to the FOSS scene, I've used open source software for years of course but I've only just recently decided to cast my imposter syndrome aside and work on projects that mean something to me. That means I've been working on programming languages and operating systems that have a particular amount of value to me, those so far being rust and serenityOS, and now fedora. Fedora is, of course, being the objectively correct distro, my distro of choice.
I would say out of the background and skills portion, I've invested the most in my software development related skills. My current job relies a lot on managing RPMs for an internal embedded Linux distribution, and I've worked on low level programming for a while now. I'd like to see what it's like in the more "public" sphere of packaging and deploying software. To list some technologies, I'm familiar with bash, python, rust, C, C++, golang, haskell, java, and whatever other things I want to work with for programming languages, and easily acclimate to whatever testing suite people want me to use.
I've never really used a mailing list before, but have lurked some, I prefer Discord like most people in my generation, but have used other similar platforms. I've been on staff for a few different gaming related forums.
The amount of time I'd be able to spend on fedora per week is a complicated question. I'm going into my last year of university, and am also concurrently employed. So that eats up most of my time. Come May, hopefully that clears up, as I'll have graduated. But until then, I anticipate maybe something like 2-5 hours a week -- which isn't much, admittedly, but I'm kind of wanting to just dedicate myself to whatever small, low time commitment tasks for the sake of KTLO.
Thank you guys for reading my wall of text, if you do at all, I'm looking forward to working with you all :)
fwiw I've subscribed to the mailing list. Unsure of what else to do with this ticket, aside from close, so I'll check back in a few days and see if there's something to do to close this off. Thanks all.
Hello,
The ticket is for you to use for whatever purpose---queries/notes/feedback. We usually close it once you've made your first contribution because that sort of entails that you now understand how things work.
The other function of the ticket, of course, is to give you initial information on the community. Have you had a chance to go through the links yet? Anything we can help with there?

I think I may just be a tad confused on how exactly to get into the packaging business. All the information is there, though, so I'm good, thank you!
You may find this page helpful. I'm thinking about dipping my toes in that pool as well so I can get a better feel for things. I have no idea what I'm going to do yet, though. I've been hanging out with the infra guys because I'm a sysad by trade, but I haven't really sunk my teeth into anything yet.
Edit: I forgot another cool link you might like. My son sent me this: https://red.ht/rpm It's an interactive lab about building RPMs. I just did it about a half hour ago. Very cool exercise.
Hi archaeologicalphonewires! Wow I haven't seen a phone wire in a while :)
Just checking in after a long time, how did navigating the Fedora ecosystem go?
If you have what you need I can close this ticket, if you need anything at all please do ask.
Regards, Mat
