#60 Welcome to Fedora @ramyaparimi
Closed: C: Complete 2 years ago by t0xic0der. Opened 3 years ago by nasirhm.

Hello ramyaparimi! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

Then, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the
community can get to know you? (interests, skills, anything you wish to say
about yourself really)

In the meantime, these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Hello,

Thank you @nasirhm for introducing me to Fedora! I am a scientific researcher passionate about computers, programming and other fun stuff. With the same enthusiasm, I learnt Python programming and Pandas mainly using the open source documentation. As a scientific writer, I wanted to explore the field of documentation/technical writing as well. That's when I came across Fedora in one of the forums.

I am very excited to be part of this massively large community. I am looking forward to learning and growing while contributing my best to the Fedora project. I can't wait to see what this journey unfolds for me.

Cheers
Ramya

What I have been up-to:

D&I Team

  • Attended mentor session by @jflory7 on Sept 3rd, 2020.
  • Was given issue #143 to work on.
  • Made PR #157 for issue #143, which was merged by @jflory7
  • Opened issue #161 to "review and update the communication platforms on the D&I Team page".
  • Made PR #164 to address issue #161, committed a change to the PR as per @jflory7 suggestion. Waiting for further inputs/merge
  • Will work on organizing organizing a discussion session on "Women in science and Fedora" for Global FWD event in September, with the help and guidance from @jflory7 and @riecatnor

Docs update

  • Made PR #91 to 'update website links in "How is Fedora Organized?" page', which was merged by @bcotton

QuickDocs

  • Was given to explore QuickDocs. So working on understanding how to edit quick docs.

First steps in Fedora

Thank you @ramyaparimi
Do you think that we can close this ticket?

@alciregi It's just been less than a month since I started at Fedora, I feel I still have a lot to explore and get to know about many things. So may be a month more or so? In the mean while I will keep updating what I have been up to here

I would second that approach. In a project as large as Fedora, you would not be doing yourself justice if you do not take time to explore the possibilities of the ways you can contribute and have fun here. Take your time and keep listing the things that you did so that it becomes a note of what you can go back to if you run out of things to explore.

(P.S. At least, that is how I approached it )

Wait wait. :-)
I do not want to rush anyone :-)
I'm here since 2017 and I still have to learn a lot of things :-)
Take your time, and don't be afraid to ask.
(A side note: I was checking all the tickets not updated in a while, and I didn't mind that @ramyaparimi was rparimi on matrix)

What I have been up-to:

D&I Team

  • Became a member of D&I team
  • Actively contributing to the issues on restructuring the D&I page
  • Opened PR #173 for issue #168
  • Active participation in the team meetings
  • Part of organizing team for FWD2020 event
  • Session speaker for Women & Non-Binary folks in Fedora in FWD2020

Technical Skills

  • Getting comfortable with command line and git
  • Getting comfortable with Ascii docs and Antora
  • Looking to explore more. I am good with Python, Pandas, SciPy and other Data Science stuff as well. Could someone let me know where else I can contribute? Python SIG is one I have in mind.

Social and communication skills

Thank you @nasirhm and @jflory7 for taking out your time to mentor me.

What I have been upto:

Exploring and trying to contribute to NeuroFedora and Fedora Møte development team.

Some updates here,

  • Ramya has been very actively contributing to the diversity and inclusion side of things
  • She has also posted some articles in the commblog (the ones that I know of are "FOSS and Fedora invitation" and "Websites and Apps Objective")
  • She has stepped up her contribution to become an Objective Lead for Fedora Websites and Apps Team.
  • She collaboratively gave a talk about the aforementioned objective in the Fedora 34 release party.
  • She is a part of the Fedora Program Management Team too, which is helmed by @bcotton.

And these are just the contributions that I know of - I am sure there are other things in Fedora too, that she is involved in. All I can say is we appreciate the way you contribute to the community and want to close this ticket as "Complete", after tagging it with the "I am Fedora" label.

What do you think @ankursinha @hhlp @andilinux @bt0dotninja @alciregi @siddharthvipul1?
