#58 Welcome to Fedora thewires2
Closed: C: Inactive 2 years ago by t0xic0der. Opened 3 years ago by alciregi.

Hello @thewires2! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

Then, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the
community can get to know you? (interests, skills, anything you wish to say
about yourself really)

In the meantime, these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Hey @alciregi thanks for the issue, i have signed up on the mailing list and sent a brief intro about myself.

@thewires2 you mentioned programming language. I don't want to be rude, but I tell you now  if you hope to contribute to Fedora by coding, the road is uphill (not so much, but yeah). I mean, a project and a community like Fedora is wide, there are not only developers around. And not only programming languages skills are required. There are tasks in the field of documentation, translation, design, marketing, mutual aid in the mailing list and on askfedora, advocating, etc.
If you want to contribute to free software in the coding field, you should look at some upstream software. I mean, the Fedora distribution, like any Linux distribution, is a curated set of software bundled together in order to provide a working operating system. The software included is not directly developed by Fedora. Yeah, I'm not the expert here, but sure, there are some piece of code developed to run the tasks to build the OS or applications useful to the project itself [1], as well the need of scripts, for instance to grab data in order to have a better view of the community [2].
On the other hand, if your goal is also to learn new things the Fedora community is a great place.
So, my personal advice is: first of all hang around, interact with people, read documentation, mailing lists threads, chats, forum, tickets, ask without fear. Then, you will find a place for you.

[2] i.e. https://pagure.io/fedora-commops/geofp, https://pagure.io/fedora-join/Fedora-Join/blob/master/f/scripts

Hey @alciregi i completely understand and i was also hoping that i don't have to start coding right away but get to understand the working of Fedora. I will be sure to take my time and hang around and find the right place for me

Hey @thewires2, it has been a while since we have heard from you. How is it going? Did you find anything interesting to work on? Also, should you have questions or queries - feel free to comment under this ticket and we'd be pleased to answer.

Hey there,

Please note that this is the final progress check we are making from our end - failing to respond to in seven days of which - we would close this ticket. Don't worry though - we understand that there can be circumstances due to which you are unable to devote time but you can come back later too and continue contributing from wherever you left off.
