Hello @chococandy ! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
You can also sign into the Fedora community Matrix chat server using your Fedora account. Most teams will have rooms here. You can join whichever ones you find interesting. (More about teams and communication platforms in the links below)
The links below are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it. They are all optional and they are by no means "complete", so please read what you find interesting and skip bits that you already know :)
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the mailing list) so that the community can get to know you? See the next section for some ideas on what to say.
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
We are all friends in the community, and it helps us all to know a little about each other. Please tell us about yourself---whatever you wish to say. Note that this is not a job interview! It is just an icebreaker to help all us all get to know each other better. The better we know each other, the better we can support each other in identifying relevant/interesting Fedora activities.
Here are some ideas:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Hello, My name is Riya Bisht, aka chococandy. I'm a junior Computer Science and Engineering student from India. My interests lie in the following fields: operating systems (Linux), networking, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and virtualization. I know C/C++, Python, Flutter, Java, HTML, CSS, Bash scripting, and Git/Github. I started using GNU/Linux as my main operating system at the start of the year 2022. Before that, I was a full-time Windows user and used to work on Linux on virtual machines, but I then decided to shift to Linux full-time in order to learn more about this operating system. I've used a variety of Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, Kali-linux, and EndeavourOS (an Arch-based distribution). During this process, I got acquainted with FOSS and started contributing to KDE, which was my first desktop environment. I've also tried building GNOME apps.
My past contributions to Linux and FOSS:
During my free time, I like to read Gentoo documentation, Linux From Scratch, fiction books, and watch Open Source events.
As I am new to the Fedora ecosystem and would like to get acquainted with it, I would like to start with testing and packaging work because I have always been curious about package management systems in Linux. I'm a Fedora KDE Sig Member, and I'm excited about giving back to this open source community.
Currently, I'm trying different things, like RPM and Flatpak packaging, and looking forward to contributing to Fedora Kionite.
For communication, I prefer Element (the Matrix client) and have used mailing lists. For learning more about open source development and specifically the Fedora ecosystem, I would be giving at least 2 hours per day (so at least 14 hours per week); on weekends, I might work for longer hours.
I'm honoured to be among the greatest minds :)
Welcome again!
For package maintenance, here are a few resources to get started with (you only know some of this, so please feel free to skip bits):
and then the docs here:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/package-maintainers/Joining_the_Package_Maintainers/
the "devel" channel on Matrix/IRC is where we discuss packaging related bits, so please feel free to join the discussion there
Interesting! Thank you for sharing these resources :)
