#28 Welcome to Fedora! @jnsamyak
Closed: C: Complete a year ago by ankursinha. Opened 4 years ago by alishapapun.

Hello @jnsamyak ! Welcome to Fedora!

Could you please introduce yourself so that the community can get to know you?
(interests, skills, how long you've been in Free/Open Source communities, what
distributions you've used, and so on?)

To start with, maybe these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then it'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Taking the first step o/
Here comes the part where I introduce myself.

Hi!
This is Samyak Jain, a 20-year old student, developer, and contributor :) (I am gonna be 22 now in October :D)
I have been an open-source learner and a contributor for a while now.

I have contributed to the Debian community for Debian packaging for ruby gems mostly, as well as, have a keen interest in python language, did some doc fixes( newbie).

I like to write mostly technical, you can find my blogs at https://samyak-jn.github.io/.

Mostly used Debian, Linux Mint, and Kali(for some time).

Looking forward to work and learn from the community and grow together.

Hello @jnsamyak and welcome!

So. If you like to write, you can take a look to the Fedora Magazine. It always needs good articles, from simple tools reviews to complex topics.
If you run a blog, there is the possibility to include it in the fedora people aggregator (I think that you need to be CLA+1 to do that).

And if you like to package stuff, well, there is a lot of documentation. And people will be happy to give you an hand (when they have the time) in the development list and on the discussion.fedora project.org forum.

Bye.

Hey @alciregi,

Mostly I would like to work on the latter suggested by you, I would love to start my contribution by starting to work in packaging. It would be a great help if someone could help me to get started, a mentor is all needed. Also, can you please ping the links here.

As well as former, I like that too, but willing to start with the technical/packaging area, and will share my packaging experience in form of blogs, so others will get motivated for the same.

Once again, thanks for the guidance, and packaging it is.

I'm not the right person to mentor packaging.
BTW, the first thing to do is to subscribe and introduce yourself (again 😅) to the dev mailing list.
Then you can read here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging-guidelines/
and here https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/creating-rpm-packages/ just to have a starting idea.

Hello,

I'd suggest reading these two documents first. They explain how one can become a package maintainer in Fedora in clear steps that are easy to follow:

These posts provide a very high level introduction to RPMs and how they are built:

Packaging is more technical than most things in Fedora, since one needs to know how to build software from source. You already have some experience in this, though, so it shouldn't be too hard for you. If you have any queries, please ask either on the devel list or here and we'll help you out.

Hi @jnsamyak : how are you doing? Have you had a chance to look at the docs and tinker with packaging yet?

How can we help?

Hiya, sorry I couldn't able to reply at the moment.

I'm currently stuck with my college majors exam, expecting to end by Thursday. (will be back to learning grid :P)
I read the docs (tried to understand the basic workflow, little time consuming, but I guess worth a while) and will try to build the package suggested by you ( @ankursinha thanks for that o/ )

Thanks for asking and for all help.

how have you been? We haven't known about you for a long time? Have you read the documentation provide here?

specialy this two link:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Join_the_package_collection_maintainers
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_get_sponsored_into_the_packager_group

have you had any problems? Have you found any interesting package to cooperate with?

PS: this is progress check 2/3. If we get to 3 progress checks without receiving a reply, the ticket will be closed as "inactive".

Hey @hhlp,
I have gone through all the documentation, and have set a fedora environment suitable for packaging. I'm thinking to start with python modules packaging, and beginner package that you can suggest?
I'll be happy to start implementing all the documentation stuff.

Thanks.

The best way is asking for Become a co-maintainer

Another way to enter the packager group is by co-maintaining a package that is already in Fedora. To get sponsored this way you need to convince the current owner of that package to let you co-maintain the package and they will act as your mentor -- teaching you how to package properly in Fedora and how to use the tools available for building and distributing packages.

There's a lot of software that the neurofedora folks are working on. Pick one that is python, and one that says "easy" from here:

Howdy \o/

Thank you for opening this ticket @t0xic0der again! :D

Just for a quick update, I'm here around for the last couple of months wandering in meetings, trying to contribute; Last year was pretty crazy with work/internships and I wasn't able to give time here, but as they say, "it's never too late, and you can always come back to things you cherish", voila! :)

Talking about contributions, I'm directly and indirectly is in contact with #fedora-india, #fedora-infra,#fedora-websites and more channels, and hope to make some significant contributions there and elsewhere :D

See ya all around :wine_glass:

Hi folks

I almost forgot about this until @zlopez brought it up today (thank you!).

We can close this ticket, I'm a member of the Infra&Releng team in CPE from my day job, and is contributing to fedora either by organizing hatch or participating in the community.

Thank you for your patience, and I really appreciate folks checking!
