#256 Welcome to Fedora yoshkamii
Opened 2 years ago by alciregi. Modified a year ago

Welcome

Hello @yoshkamii! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Introduction:

My name is Joshua Moore. I am currently an undergrad pursuing a bachelors in Software Engineering with one more semester left to complete. My time at university has been spent contributing to two NSF funded open source projects in wireless communications. I plan to stay at my current university to pursue a PhD in Computer Engineering starting in the spring of 2023.

Experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

  • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?

As an undergraduate researcher i have been a part of two National Science Foundation (NSF) projects which are open source. As a part of these projects, i have helped build software related to an end to end wireless testbed using Software Defined Radios (SDR's), Documented procedures to follow, helped with outreach, attended conferences with the intent on networking and sharing my research, as well as other things.

At my University i started a Linux user group under our student IEEE group that people often use to engage in talks about open source, software projects, and news related to open source. It has been a rewarding experience to help build a small community of like minded individuals. We use discord and a bridged irc channel to communicate.

  • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
FOSS has done so much for me in my pursuit of knowledge in software, so I want to contribute meaningfully. I have learned that the easiest way to learn is to work on hard things with people that I can count on, and that is why I want to contribute to the fedora project.

Background Skills

  • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)

I have been using Linux as my daily operating system for around 10 years. In context, I upgraded from windows around my sophomore year in highschool. I have distro hopped countless times, but as of writing Fedora linux is my main OS.

  • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
I am proficient in markdown and RST to build documentation using readthedocs.
I maintain my own personal website, as well as 2 project websites for open source projects.

  • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin

I am comfortable with command line and using version control.
Programming Languages: C, C++, Go, Python, HTML, CSS, JS
Familiar in: Socket Programming (Unix), Systems Programming in C, Docker, Helm, Kubernetes,Virtual Machines / Emulation, Custom Kernel configurations.

Experience in communication platforms:

  • have you used mailing lists before?
    Yes

  • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    Irc or Discord

  • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
    No

  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Around 6 hours a week to start.

I am interested in working on machine learning or containerization for fedora. Is there someone that could mentor me in one of these areas, or explain the current challenges?

It'll be best to join the machine learning SIG and the containers SIG to see what's going on and talk to them to learn the current status of things. One-to-one mentoring isn't very common in the community because as volunteers it's hard to commit extra time to mentor folks individually. So generally, there's collective exchange of knowledge---you speak to everyone and everyone speaks to you. That way, people learn from everyone around them, and no one person becomes the point of contact/failure:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/containers/preface/

note that we're a Linux distribution, so the focus of the ML SIG will be to make Fedora a good platform for ML---they may not be undertaking ML projects themselves as part of their Fedora contributions.

Hello @yoshkamii

@hhlp Thank you for checking! I have joined the desktop sig's chat and have been waiting for an opportunity to help with a task! I am still trying to learn how to navigate myself and help in the most effecient way

that's great. They also do a lot of their discussion over their pagure repo, and discussion.fp.o. Have you been keeping an eye on those?

Did you get a chance to get in touch with the machine learning and container folks? (I'm not in either team, so i don't quite know how they're doing)
