Welcome

Hello @aschjo ! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hello!

You can call me Astero. I'm an inspiring Data Analyst but currently an Electronic Retail Associate. I tend to have a very outgoing personality and enjoy working with people! I enjoy working around databases, using spreadsheets, writing documentation, as well as project management by collaborating with others; I also enjoy making websites! I've been using Fedora for about 5 years now; first on Fedora Workstation and now on Fedora Silverblue. I would like to contribute, but I'm not sure where to start.

This is the first time contributing with FOSS; hoping to gain more knowledge during my time here!

Fedora Silverblue is now my daily driver as I believe it's the future of the Fedora community as a whole; however, the past 4 years I mostly used Fedora Workstation.

I have a skill set with both GIMP and Inkscape; I used inkscape to create my profile picture, but logos and such aren't 100% my cup of tea to do on the regular, but I do enjoy giving ideas on designs. I tend to enjoy documentation, writing, and helping others understand what's happening and what they need to do in order to get started; much like the tasks undertaken by an HR worker. I also happen to be very good with video editing as I helped a few smaller channels in getting to a sustainable amount of subscribers/views, but of course not to the point of thousands upon thousands. I've preferred mostly works around what a Data Analyst would undertake such as creating/maintaining databases, exploring metrics and budgeting in spreadsheets, as well as some IT Support in helping people understand their devices and minor software troubleshooting.

I am quite a novice when it comes to software development, but it is something I am wishing to learn more about. Recently I have started making a GTK project; but it's not quite finished. I enjoy doing web design and I also enjoy programming with Rust. I am familiar with git as I use GitLab quite frequently.

For communication I prefer Element/Matrix or email, otherwise I am pretty open in using Telegram or Discord for communication. As far as my experience with moderating forums has been quite minimal, but I have moderated forums for video game communities.

I would like to spend at least 20 hours a week (2-3 hours a day) volunteering. I am also willing to learn a few things that I am required to in order to help with contributing effectively.

@hhlp
Hello!
Thank you for getting back to me.
I've been busy mostly with college in pursuing a bachelor's in computer science as well as a recent hiccup with accessing my fedora account (which recently I got around to fixing).

I want to contribute to the Fedora project but I'm just unsure on where to start as I enjoy more of a direct project flow on what to work on while collaborating with others. If there's any direction with this regard, I'm all ears!
