Hello @cybaright ! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
Been an edge participant for many years, first ran a linux distro in mid 1990s when I was studying electronic engineering and run workstations and servers for many years in the 2000s : )
have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
Not very closely engaged previously
how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community? your background/skills, for example:
community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
I'm interested in the rpm distros, love Fedora as my desktop, Rocky on servers, I'm an IT generalist and I'm not sure yet how best to contribute to Fedora
Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
Yes, F35 on my main workstation, tablet etc and a baremetal f36 pre-release, interested in web apps, waydroid, would love to see fedora thrive on pine phone pro and see general success of fedora.
non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
I can do quite a bit of most things, which I know probably doesn't help focus this intro much does it but it's true ha ha : )
have you used mailing lists before?
um, yep : )
what is your preferred real time chat platform?
element/matrix
have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
no
minimal initially whilst I figure out if I have a niche or role at fedora, once engaged I could probably put a lot of time in over the longer term
I live in Australia. My Fedora motivation generally just stems from my enjoyment of using the OS, it's FFFF values and a desire to support, promote and be part of such a worthy and interesting global community product. In the past over many years as an electronics engineer and IT professional I've been a consumer of FOSS via fedora, centos etc, happy to give back a little if I can
Yes, I first tried Red hat (off a floppy from a PC magazine I think : ) ) and then Fedora Core in the early days, went for many years using Fedora as a primary desktop around the Fedora 6-10 era, back to windows for while whilst building and administering Centos servers, then recently decided to put Fedora back on my workstations and devices as part of a growing concern I have about some of the privacy, lack of openness and tracking issues etc on other OSs.
