Happily I tried to subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org.
I have been and am moderating several mailman lists with +1k subscribers – but so far, I feel, I have difficulties understanding the implementation of the mailman list here... I would have expected an automated email to me saying I am subscribed? So, as I am not getting that, I am writing here :) I hope that's ok for you.
Ok, after some years of bug reporting on bugzilla, I might say, I am "joining" sideways. I felt I am somehow in the margins of the community for a long time. But I never stumbled upon this SIG's process to "join". That it exists, I learned implicitly via https://pagure.io/fedora-join/Fedora-Join/issue/264.
Thank you for the links on "what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it". Current Objectives point me to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Objectives/CommunityOutreachRevamp - looks interesting, but not clear to me where we are in the process.
Badges - yeah, I noticed these a while ago. Interestingly, I have no White Rabbit :( I would love one. But my time zone is already correct... But will use this ticket's pointer as a prompt to re-save it.
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/commops/outreach-badges/first-steps/#crypto-badger asks me to upload an SSH Key. I have done that some time ago. Did not get a badge, I think. Same is the case for GPG - no badge but I have attached my GPG Key ID.
How to be a successful contributor is a very helpful read. Thank you. So, please read my notes above as friendly wondering, not as an indication that there is anything very wrong here... I am just a bit puzzled. It seems like the framing in that document shifts from community to organisations. I did not really expect that. Hmm, am I welcome with my interest to join the community, I wonder(?). Well, maybe my intro words help...
OK this is me. I am interested in socio-technical complexities and environmental issues. Skills? Well, I guess you are interested in the IT-related skills. Well, as I said above, mailman I can post to and administrate, git I use every day for LaTeX projects, I compile software that I need but is not yet available on the repos. At the moment I do not think I will be a programmer any time soon. Culture, diversity, bias, political economy, environmental dimensions (especially carbon) might be potentially of overlapping interest between the Fedora world and my non-Fedora-life.
How did I learned about the Fedora project? Back in 2015 I had a new Mac Powerbook and I was looking for a Linux distribution that I could run on it; I only managed to get Fedora to run, no other distribution. Afterwards I started to appreciate many aspects of the politics and culture of Fedora, so I sticked around.
My personal medium term objective is to learn to package https://github.com/ccbogel/QualCoder.
