#172 Welcome to Fedora, @kunalprakash1309
Opened 2 years ago by t0xic0der. Modified 4 months ago

Hello @kunalprakash1309! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

Then, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the
community can get to know you? (interests, skills, anything you wish to say
about yourself really)

In the meantime, these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Hey @kunalprakash1309 how are you?
This is a progress check for this ticket. Did you find anything interesting? How is it going?

Thank you for your email

I contributed to the project during outreachy. But due to lack of
contribution I was not selected. Apart from that I really like the fedora
community. I would like to contribute to projects in upcoming outreachy or
GSoC.

Thank you

Hi @kunalprakash1309 : Outreachy and GSoC (and other such initiatives) are very competitive, as you found out this year. Only 1 or 2 people get selected.

The point of contributing to FOSS (not just Fedora, but any FOSS communities) is to promote the philosophy of FOSS. Sure, getting paid for doing it would be nice, but most of us volunteer without pay. Some of us get lucky and find work in places that work with FOSS and allow us to contribute too. It really depends on where you are.

So, even if you weren't selected for Outreachy, I'd suggest that you keep contributing to FOSS somewhere, even if not Fedora. You will learn lots, improve your profile, help the FOSS community, and it will improve your chances of being selected in the next round too. Don't look to contribute only if you get selected for a paid programme---you'll miss out on a lot in the meantime.

Hello everyone. I like to contribute to some python projects. I facing problem in finding beginner python issues. @t0xic0der @alciregi @ankursinha

@kunalprakash1309 a few bits of extra information:

Fedora, like all other Linux distributions, is "downstream", which means to make the OS (and all variants), we take FOSS software that the awesome FOSS community develops and package it all up to work with each other. We don't develop all the software that goes into making the OS. Yes, lots of us package maintainers are also part of the teams that develop these tools, but the "upstream" development (on GitHub, for example) is different from the "packaging" (converting to RPMs) that we do in Fedora.

The development bits that happen in Fedora are mostly centred around building the infrastructure that the community uses. So, mote (which you have been linked to above), our Koji builder, the Bodhi update system etc. are developed by the community.

So, if you are looking for dev work, you can help develop all these infrastructure tools, and you can help maintain packages in Fedora.

All of this is covered in the links we've give you in the initial post, so please do go through them. It is important for you to have a general idea of the community before diving into tasks. That way, once you finish tasks, you know what to do next---you will know where else work is needed that you are interested in.

(Also note that we don't tend to assign tasks in Fedora because we're a community of volunteers and we're all equals. So we all just talk about what needs to be done so that everyone knows, and then whoever wants to work on a task takes it up)

Thank you @t0xic0der and @ankursinha for your response. I will look into the links provided above.
