#121 Welcome to Fedora nattes
Opened a year ago by alciregi. Modified 4 months ago

Hello @nattes! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

Then, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the
community can get to know you? (interests, skills, anything you wish to say
about yourself really)

In the meantime, these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Thank you for helping me through the steps!

Thank you @t0xic0der

I found out how to translate with webtranslate.

I translated a few bits from SIG, but as I saw there is going to be a website revamp I am not sure what I can translate.

I did not find out how to "open a ticket in Translation Pagure and apply for the l10n group."

I wrote about my "newbie" experience here https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Nattes/Newbie_Tour

I also made 3 pull requests two are "waiting triage" https://pagure.io/user/nattes/
so .... I'm stuck in limbo to resume.

also I would like to get a badge for my particpation in FWD in oct 2020 but I have no clue how to do that

Hey @nattes,

Hope you are doing well and enjoyed your time with us at Nest With Fedora 2021. Should you have missed out on our talks, a recording of those would be made available very soon on our official YouTube channel. I reach out to know if you have found something exciting to contribute to and be a part of in the community. With that, I am marking this ticket with its second progress check.

For the badge, you would want to reach out to the Fedora Badges telegram group or IRC chat with questions or simply open an ticket in their issue tracker.

Hi sorry for not answering, I have not seen your message until now.
I have found what I could do, mainly translate, but nobody has ever answered my questions on how to join a group up there on this specific question ". open a ticket in Translation Pagure and apply for the l10n group.
=20"
I dont know how to do that, I dont know how to join a group.
I gathered that you need to hang around a bit before being accepted in a group.
I suppose I got demotivated and do not feel I am bringing any value if the quesitons raised dont get answered.

Hum, I am not in the telgram group anymore and I am not used to IRC.

Also you don't get any badges for translating, I think it is not quite fair for translators, who are allready a non tech group.

Hello @nattes
This ticket has not been updated for a while.
How are you?

Well i feel unwelcomed, that's all. So i feel bad.

"Thank you! I think I have done all of this apart from "4. open a ticket =
in Translation Pagure and apply for the l10n group." => no answers. 7 months.

Well i feel unwelcomed, that's all. So i feel bad.

Sorry to hear this.
I don't think you are unwelcomed. The point is that people is busy (not only in day to day community tasks) and sometimes something can get lost.
Perseverance is the key.
If it is 7 months you are waiting for a reply, well... maybe sometime could be useful to "bump" [1] your question. Maybe it was lost in somebody mailbox.
(Not to say that you can use weblate without being part of the l10n FAS group; but I know, I've raised the issue various times that it isn't too funny to translate stuff without interaction with other people).
And you are right that no badges for translators is unfair. But you know, it needs work to integrate the badge system to the translation one, and it is not simple, and it needs someone that do the work, and it is not simple too. Surely, ranting and feeling bad don't solve the issue :-)

Ok. Can you provide a link to your l10n application? If you are still interested.

Hi thank you for taking the time to answer on a Xmas eve :). I have allready done a bit of webtranslate from English to French.
I don't know if I applied to the l10n FAS group , my long-time ago question was "how do you apply to an interest group ". I could not find the right place for this particular group.
I was given this to do "open a ticket in Translation Pagure and apply for the l10n group.". But I dont know "where" to do that, nor "how". So I cannot provide an application link.

Anyway, happy xmas to you.

Glad to hear you @nattes
Here we have a brand new doc (that is already outdated ) about translation team
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/localization/join/

Here you can find the mailing list https://lists.fedoraproject.org/admin/lists/trans.lists.fedoraproject.org/

Simply send an introduction there and ask for the FAS group membership.
It was discussed if the workflow for this team should be to file pagure tickets or simple requests on the mailing list. But anyway what you prefer can work.
For the records this should be the pagure repository https://pagure.io/fedora-l10n/tickets

Another task could be to migrate
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/Translate_on_Weblate?rd=L10N/Translate_On_Weblate
to the Docs platform.

Thanks.

Hi thanks for your answer. I see that to become a member of the L10N SIG group I have to contact a sponsor, and that you are a sponsor :). Therefore can you add me to this group ?

I have allready sent a message to the translation mailing list here in July 2021 https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/trans@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/22Y4LZC6TBD32VWOW3LSWK5467HEZCYF/
I sent a new one today.

Kind regards,

Natacha

Eh. I can add you to the l10n FAS group, it is not a problem. As you pointed in your mail, the issue is the interaction with other people. I don't know if the "fr" team is more active than the "it" one.

Ok. I added you to the l10n group.
Sorry for the delay.

I agree that the lack of integration with the badging system is unfortunate. I don't know if someone can solve it. I don't think it is so simple (weblate is an hosted service, who has the contacts with the weblate company should involve them, who has the admin rights on weblate should take care of the integration, the Fedora infrastructure team should be involved as well, the badge team, and so on). As said in the email, I would raise this issue to the Mindshare Committee https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/mindshare-committee, since the localization team is under its umbrella.

Thanks for adding me ! I understand this is complex, and I certainly dont have the necessary technical background to solve it (sorry). At the same time it is also a matter of diversity, as translating is not related to development or coding. Giving rewards to some and not others might not produce an environment where different kind of people are willing to contribute. Translating in other languages is also a matter of diversity, and reaching out to non anglophone potential users.

I think if the easy fix is maintained, as I read a thread linked on the mindshare report, it might be nice to have a few "non coding" easy fixes and to put there easy things to be translated.

Thank you for your help, really appreciated :)
