#120 Welcome to Fedora! @armanwu
Closed: C: Complete 2 years ago by alciregi. Opened 2 years ago by hhlp.

Hello @armanwu ! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

Then, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the
community can get to know you? (interests, skills, anything you wish to say
about yourself really)

In the meantime, these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Hi, there..

My name is Arman Arisman a.k.a Arman Wu. I'm from Indonesia. I'm just an ordinary Fedora Workstation User since Fedora 32 and have no background in computer or any opensource project. But hopefully I can contribute in this Fedora community, especially in Design Team. I have some experience in design.

Thanks and regards :)

I checked the link https://accounts.fedoraproject.org/group/designteam/ and it says that I have to contact a group sponsor..

Sorry if I ask a lot of question.. I don't have experience with forum and mailing list..

Thanks :)

In my humble opinion you should take things calmly, it is not a sprint, it is a long-distance race, you should start by being part of a single team and once you gain experience and know-how to work as a fedora (reading the links provided here) expand your horizons ...

about FAS:

Joining Groups

Previously, FAS2 had the ability for users to apply for groups, and a group administrator
needed to approve these requests. However, many groups have specific joining procedures
involving interacting with the group via other channels (like email or IRC). In the new Fedora
Accounts, a group sponsor adds new members to the group; there is no additional process
required in the accounts system.

Hi, Héctor.. i'ts been a week since I joined Fedora Project group..

I've tried to do some little things I could do in this group, like completing my profile, join some discussions, and do same translation on Fedora Weblate.. so many questions from me, but I think I won't ask all the question to you or to groups.. haha.. I still have to adapt here and get used to the workflow..

Maybe just one question.. are my activities will be evaluated by some teams from Fedora Community? I read this while I translated to Bahasa Indonesia: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-join/welcome/welcome/ ..

Just curious.. I'd just like to know if I'm doing right or wrong in here :)

And I've joined the mailing list for id-community.lists.fedoraproject.org and trans-id.lists.fedoraproject.org .. but I don't see any post and activities there.. how usually the situation is handled by the community?

Thanks and regards,
Arman

that depends on the POLICY TEAM you're involved which checks inactive members.

yes, I think you're right doing well here :)

Ok, Héctor.. thanks for your answers.. I saw some of my work related to translation has appeared, but there's some mistake I've been made there :D

I think it's minor but I will fix it soon and continue with antoher works in translation..

Hi, Héctor..

what's different between issue and ticket? And what's different between https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/ and https://pagure.io/? Sometimes I find it difficult to choose where to comment. I've tried to comment on this link https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/silverblue-logo-redesign/29340/24, but it has some topic in this link https://pagure.io/design/issue/763. So I've decided to comment on both links.

Actually I intended to join the design team at the beginning. I've joined design group on matrix and Telegram. But I haven't been able to find a good way to contribute.

Meanwhile I will continue this work: https://translate.fedoraproject.org/languages/id/fedora-docs-l10n-fedora-join/

Discussion is for discussion of development and other work within the Fedora Project. For support and troubleshooting Ask Fedora is the best place for these tasks.

Some Fedora TEAM don't use M.L or Pagure an example of these are:

I am 100% with this.

@armanwu, please take some time out to explore the subprojects/SIGs/Teams that we have in Fedora Project and try to understand the way they work. There might be some teams that rely on tickets being triaged first before having folks assigned to them, while there can be some with weekly update meets on video calls. With our community having folks from diverse backgrounds, you would very soon come to embrace the different ways of working but in order for that to happen, please observe before getting into contributing.

I understand that it might feel slow and then there is a likeliness that the interest might be slowly lost with time but please do not worry about that. We appreciate all kinds of contributions - be it big or small - be it frequent or sparsely distributed. You are making good progress with the translation work for Fedora Join docs!

Hi, @t0xic0der .

Thank you for your advice. This is my first time to join in open source project community. So many things to learn. Honestly I was so confused at the first time. Big thanks to @hhlp for helping me. And thanks to @jflory7 for introducing some Telegram groups so I can be here today.

I've just finished my work in https://translate.fedoraproject.org/languages/id/fedora-docs-l10n-fedora-join/ . Tomorrow I will start with another project in Weblate. And maybe will take a look at Fedora Design Team :)

Regards,

Hi, @hhlp .

Just a little question. I found "comitted" and "pushed commit" on my activity. What's the different between "comitted" and "pushed commit"?

Regards,

Hi, @hhlp . I still don't have group membership now. It shown on my profile page.

Is there a certain procedure to get group membership?

Thanks,

Hi, @hhlp . I still don't have group membership now. It shown on my profile page.

Which group?

Hi, @hhlp . I still don't have group membership now. It shown on my profile page.

Which group?

Oh I mean I just looked at my account profile and it says "has no group memberships". Just wanna know ho to get group membership.

Actually I just joined here about a month ago. I've tried participating in several fields according to my interests, like translating (to Bahasa Indonesia), design team, and i3 SIG. But all I'm really doing is translating. While in design team and i3 SIG, I was just commenting and create an issue.

Are there any special conditions for getting group membership other than actively participating?

Thanks,

Well. It depends on the team process/policy. Every team has its own.
You should also understand that nowadays, since group membership is not required to contribute in many areas of the project (i.e. you can translate stuff without being part of any FAS group), group membership doesn't count so much in many teams. Your role and contributions are still valued. (i.e. the only team where group membership is required, is the packager one; even if you can submit patches and PR without being in the packagers group).
However, if you contact the team where you are contributing, asking for FAS group membership, usually there is no problem.
Did you already sent an introduction to the translation team? Sorry I may have missed that.

Hi, @alciregi ! Ok noted. Thanks for your explanation.

Sure. I've already sent an introduction to the translation team in mailing list. Here's the link:

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/trans@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/OLBPAQY4PJHKK6Z4X6CWAMZI7HXFPEIR/

Thanks,

Oh OK.
Sorry for the delay then. It was in my to do list but I forgot about it.
I added you to the l11n FAS group.

Thanks, @alciregi ! I've just seen an update on my profile.

Hi, @hhlp @t0xic0der @alciregi .

I have a question that I have asked several places but did not get an answer. I asked on the Fedora Badges mailing list and made a ticket on Fedora Badges.

I feel like my Fedora Badges never add up. I have 2 badges and after that never got any more. I feel I've done some of the requirements such as sign agreement, add a wiki profile, and login to Fedora Badges.

https://badges.fedoraproject.org/user/armanwu

From what I've read, I should have gotten a badge for these activities. But I didn't get it. I saw some of my friends doing the same thing but getting those badges.

I know that my contributions are still recorded without badges. Just curious to see if there's something wrong with my account.

Do you have any ideas about this? Thanks.

Hey @armanwu,

Let me reach out to the Badges chat and I'll ask them.

Thanks, @t0xic0der . Hope there is an answer.

Hey @armanwu
I see you have already opened a ticket on badges
Can you gather the badges you think you should have received and proof of those, and post them in the issue comment :)
that will get you those badges manually awarded

Hi, @siddharthvipul1 . Ok, I'll do it. Thanks :)

Hi. I've tried updating the Fedora Badges issue related to my badges. But it's been almost 2 weeks no response. And I've tried to inform the group chat and the Fedora Badges mailing list. But haven't received a response yet. Looks like our friends at Fedora Badges are focused on other things.

Honestly I would love to have my Fedora account linked to Fedora Badges. Especially when talking to other friends, they usually tell each other about the badges they have earned. But it's okay. I will continue with my contribution. My translation work is a bit off, I'm writing for Fedora Magazine and helping with the design team's logo guide documentation.

Thanks for the response and help :)

Best regards,

Hey @armanwu,

You have been around with us for some time now - actively contributing to design, translations and documentation and we like to believe that now you have an idea about how the community is organized. We appreciate the time and effort that you spend contributing to us and it is about time that we close this welcome ticket after adding that shiny "I am Fedora" label.

What do you folks suggest, @hhlp @ankursinha @alciregi @siddharthvipul1 @andilinux @bt0dotninja and finally, @armanwu?

(As a sidenote, this ticket right here would be going to be one of the "flawless victories" - the assignee has been so active and helpful that this ticket does not even have a single progress check - the only way is up!)

Hi, @t0xic0der . Thanks.

I don't understand about the "I am Fedora" label. But by now I've quite understood the workflow in Fedora. And I've found several teams that I'm comfortable with, especially the design team and Fedora Magazine.

I'm still translating, but not as active as yesterday. I spend more time on Fedora Magazine.

https://fedoramagazine.org/author/armanwu/

Currently working on 3 more articles :)

Thanks to the Fedora Join team. Very helpful :D

"I'm Fedora" label is the way to close tickets when you're well involved in the community for that reason:

+1 for close with I'm Fedora Label

Regards.,

Additional to this, @armanwu

As Jane learns about the community, she will hopefully find tasks and teams that interest her. When she has joined a team, she has become a contributing Fedora community member! We mark the ticket as S: I am Fedora to celebrate this.

@armanwu, you have been contributing to us for some time now in translation and design. We like to think that you now understand what is our community about, how to contribute effectively and how to be a part of the it. We would like to tag this ticket with the "I am Fedora" label and close it. What do you think?
