#103 Welcome to Fedora, @theloudspeaker!
Closed: C: Inactive 2 years ago by t0xic0der. Opened 3 years ago by t0xic0der.

Hello @theloudspeaker! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

Then, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the
community can get to know you? (interests, skills, anything you wish to say
about yourself really)

In the meantime, these links would be a good read. They tell you what the
Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora:
what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Hey @theloudspeaker, I was exploring the welcome tickets here and I discovered that we are yet to hear your introduction from you. Please feel free to drop your introduction as a comment under this ticket and in the mailing lists.

EDIT - By any chance if you are done introducing yourself, please drop a link to your mailing list thread where you introduced yourself here as a comment.

Thanks

Hey @t0xic0der
Thanks for the reminder. so here goes the introduction:

About me:
I am a Linux enthusiast and a distro hopper from Hyderabad, India. Currently pursuing M.Sc. Physics.

Open Source background:
I have been in Linux world since last 4 years and only distros that stayed on my system even after days and days of disto-hopping were Lubuntu and Elementary OS. (I somehow couldn't get Fedora to boot on my old laptop back then) So I decided to contribute back to them as I really liked them. Went to Lubuntu, fixed a couple of bugs, added a few features and I liked it very much. Became a fan of opensource world. Continued contributing and now I am an active member of the development team since December 2019.

Applied to Google Summer of Code 2020 for Debian's Android SDK tools project. It's a huge project and quite challenging as I had to wire my way around Debian's strict policies and third party add-ons in source of Gradle and Kotlin. It was a fun experience. And now I am a regular contributor to the team. Still working on same project. talked to people in #fedora-java about this.

Fedora and me:
So after release of Fedora 33, I gave it a shot on my new laptop and I really liked the adoption of new technologies like BTRFS, wayland, pipewire, etc. and the amount of refined desktop environment, oh my god! trust me when I say this coz it's coming from a Ubuntu developer - Fedora does GNOME better. Soooo smooth.

Even though I have a pretty robust Ubuntu install on my laptop which hasn't moved in a year, I went ahead and put fedora in a separate partition because it was too good to not use. and I can't move from my comfortable Ubuntu setup. So I boot to fedora now when i am not doing any serious work. I even participated in kernel test week last month and helped with testing 5.11 for Fedora 33. Currently reading the docs you linked above.

Bottom line:
I like fedora, I would like to contribute to it. Point me to anything you feel okay. I can work on cpp, python, java and kernel related things. (Did I mention I compiled a custom build of linux kernel with MPTCP enabled and use it as a daily driver? 😛)
