#264 Welcome to Fedora: what about adding survey like questions to the welcome ticket
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by alciregi. Opened 2 years ago by alciregi.

Hello team.
What about adding a brief survey to the Welcome To Fedora workflow?
The survey should aim to identify the level of expertise in the fields a newcomer should encounter in a FLOSS project like Fedora. i.e. has the newcomer subscribed a mailing list before, the level of confidence with git, if they already contributed to a FLOSS project and in what way?
This could help us identify if a newcomer already know some workflows or they need particular attention. Saying "go, and subscribe to the mailing list" could be easy for someone, but for someone else could be like "hey, what? a mailing what?" and at the same time they don't ask for help (maybe to avoid to make a bad impression), and we should be more careful and give better information.

in terms of actually learning from such a survey, Fedora might profit from at least two perspectives: how can newcomers fit into what Fedora already does and how Fedora operates (specified in the question above); as well as asking theme what or how they might contribute in ways that are not yet established in Fedora. To illustrate the latter: In my normal work world, I am considered somewhat a computer person, but in the Fedora context I probably count as a non-IT person. What is it I can contribute? Social science expertise on IT, programming, situated software use, tinkering...

So, sorting newcomers into pre-existing levels of expertise only would be a loss. Consider mapping areas of expertise whilst being open to new fields of expertise and inviting the newcomers to make explicit how they think they might contribute. Fedora might learn surprising things about newcomers...

Wait wait. Maybe I didn't explain my idea. I don't want to make a mass survey.
I'm proposing to add a brief list of questions to the Welcome ticket.

My idea, the intent to add a little survey, is not to make statistics or sorting newcomers and so on.
It is a way to understand if someone is independent in some tasks or they need additional help.
I mean, for instance, if I say: "subscribe to a mailing list", for me it is obvious what I'm talking about, but for some people it is not so plain, there is people that nowadays doesn't even know what a mailing list is. So, I need to explain them what a mailing list is before tell them to subscribe to one :-)
Not to say about git workflow. Jane wants to contribute to documentation, they are a great writer but haven't never heard about git before, "hey, go to the docs repository, we use git, antora, podman" it is like saying "you are on your own". If we know how well versed is Jane about git, we can provide additional help before sending them to the repository.

I was going to ask if you meant a separate survey or some questions to the welcome to Fedora ticket :D

Yeh, adding more bits to the welcome to Fedora ticket would be good. What if we provide some questions to help people write their introductions? Something like:

When you're comfortable enough, please introduce yourself here so folks can get to know you. Your introduction can include:

- what your experience with FOSS is
- what your technical skills are (git? rpm ? Linux? command line?)
...

(example questions ^)

PS: i tweaked the ticket topic to make it clearer

Yes, exactly.

How many places of introducing oneself is Fedora cultivating? Or better: which places? So far, I have noted https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/introduce-yourself/1875 as an open space to introduce oneself... It is a place I can go to to get to know Fedora users.

But you seem to refer to something else. Where do you go to get to know Fedora users?

@ingli please stay on topic. This ticket is not about places where to know Fedora users.
:-)

The Join SIG is not about getting to know Fedora users at all. We are explicitly about helping people that want to contribute to the community. So, the discourse topic you link to is not related to contribution at all---anyone can go and introduce themselves there.

The "Welcome to Fedora" process is for anyone that would like to contribute to Fedora. The introduction there is for us, the Join SIG folks, to get to know the newcomer so we can suggest the next steps to them.

The thing is, folks can introduce themselves anywhere. Not just the dicussion.fp.o topic---every mailing list and every category there is on discussion.fp.o can be used for introductions, for example when joining a team. So there will always be lots of overlap.

Please remove, modify or add points you consider useful.

When you're comfortable enough, please introduce yourself here so folks can get to know you.
In order to understand better your needs, your introduction can include (among other things):

- what your experience with FOSS is
   - is this your first time in a FOSS community?
   - how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
- what your technical skills are
   - have you ever used git?
   - rpm packaging
   - Linux (is GNU/Linux your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
   - command line
- experience in communication platforms
   - have you ever subscribed to a mailing list?
   - what is your preferred real time chat platform?
   - have you ever been a forum moderator?
- how much time you can contribute (roughly hours per week); are you available every day?

Please remember that this is not a job interview or a resume, but a friendly way to get to know each other better. If you don't know what git is, that's fine. If you aren't online on a daily basis, it's fine too.

How about a slightly different opening & ending?

In order to understand better your needs, your introduction can include (among other things):

Yep. Sounds better.

Well, I'm not sure if I understand "match-making" very well (ahem, English is not my main language).
However the rationale is (from my point of view) to understand if someone want to contribute, but they start from zero, or if they are already well versed with some tools and processes. So, if I say "subscribe to this mailing list" or "fork this repository" I can know if such person can operate in autonomy, if they know what I'm talking about, or they need additional assistance. (You know, people could feel intimidated asking for clarifications to more skilled people).

yeah, that is what I understood. I think a sentence that explains this rationale would help.
The proposed end at the moment mainly tells us what the rationale is not (with a positive formulation "hidden" in the midst.) So, what is it?

If not match-making (well, that's a notion you would use in inter-human relationships management, say via Tinder), might something like this work?:

We invite you to address these prompts because we like to get to know each other better. If you don't know what git, rpm, etc are, that's fine. If you aren't online on a daily basis, it's fine too. So, this is not a job interview or a resume; please consider the introduction a friendly and constructive opener for a conversation between us, so we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.

@ingli I added you to the fedora-join FAS group (as a temporary membership, for now, in order to be able to edit the wiki).

Please, could you edit this page with your suggestions? https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Join/questions

Don't bother with the wiki style, it will be modified anyway if and when we will add the text to the Pagure template.

Thanks.

Hey people. I would like to move on. Could you add suggestions and feedback?

Last week I updated the wiki with the formulations that emerged in the discussion on this ticket.

Hey people. I would like to move on. Could you add suggestions and feedback?

Sorry about the delay @alciregi . I made some tweaks, just to try and include more areas in the examples. There are lots of non-technical bits in the community that almost everyone can contribute to, so trying to give them some exposure.

How does it look?

Great.
Thank you @ingli and thank you @ankursinha
I propose to wait a week, and if there are no more proposals and modifications, consider such text as approved.

I modified the template with a little edit.

When you're comfortable enough, please introduce yourself here so the community can get to know you better. Some information to understand your requirements better would also be most useful. For example: ---> In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
confortable).

Added the title "Welcome" and "Get to know each other better" before this new paragraph.
