#9098 ask.fedoraproject.org login failure for my current account
Closed: Fixed 3 years ago by nicklevinson. Opened 3 years ago by nicklevinson.

Describe what you would like us to do:

-
Please repair my login.

On 6-26-20, much like several months ago and over a period of months, perhaps a year or more before that, I have been consistently unable to log into ask.fedoraproject.org even though it recognizes my account. I have asked for login help there but their most recent reply, about 3 months ago, is that this is beyond their ability to help. They provided advice but said that if it still fails I should contact Pagure. It still fails. I posted yesterday (https://pagure.io/pagure/issue/4909) but was referred to you.

My browser is Firefox 77.0.1 (64-bit) on a Fedora 32 Linux platform and the browser is set to clear all cookies and the cache at quit/restart. I tried to log into ask.fedoraproject.org. I got a dialog that was populated in fields and commented in green text in probably the same way it has been since this problem began (see attachment). I clicked the "Log In" and that made the dialog disappear but then the dialog came back, populated and green-texted as before. I went to https://pagure.io/ but apparently I wasn't logged into there. I clicked the Log In button, but found I was already logged into there without authentication from me for pagure.io. So, pagure.io must have gotten the authentication from ask.fedoraproject.org. I had https://ask.fedoraproject.org/ in another tab so I refreshed it, but apparently I was still not logged into ask.fedoraproject.org. I clicked the "Log In" button and got the already-populated already-green-texted dialog as before. In Firefox, I went to about:preferences#privacy > Cookies and Site Data > Clear Data... (dots so in original) & cleared all. I closed the prepopulaed ask.fedoraproject.org dialog, using the "x" button. I went again to about:preferences#privacy > Cookies and Site Data > Clear Data... (dots so in original), where data was reported as already being at zero bytes, & again cleared all. At ask.fedoraproject.org I clicked the "Log In" button. The dialog appeared already populated and green-texted as before. I still was not logged into ask.fedoraproject.org.

When do you need this to be done by? (YYYY/MM/DD)

Not a rush; sometime reasonable. You know your system better than I do.

So, lets leave pagure.io completely out of this.

Both pagure.io and ask.fedoraproject.org use fedoras ipsilon instance for authentication.

A few questions:

  • You used to be able to login to ask.fedoraproject.org fine? or it never worked?

  • In the above screenshot, what happens if you say 'create new account' ?

@bcotton @mattdm do we have a way to contact support for ask?

@bcotton @mattdm do we have a way to contact support for ask?

I don't have admin on Ask, but I assume it's by email to support@discourse.org like for discussion.fp.o.

That is indeed the case.

Long ago, it used to work. I possibly have a discussion post in there, but I don't remember from what year.

I did not try to create a new account. I assume they don't want me to have two accounts.

I did contact an admin at ask, who referred me to your site, but maybe you know a different admin, and I did not contact discourse.org.

Where the heck are you living or the places you monitor temperatures? 118 and 129 F!! Death Valley or Lake Havasu City?

Those are internal temperatures of the laptop, and the laptop insulates me from the worst of them, so my lap doesn't get that hot. It would take too long right now (I'm on battery power) to look up the particulars, but they might be for the CPU and the system board.

Can you try the 'create new account' and see what it says? If there is an existing account, I expect it to say that and error out... if somehow your old account doesn't exist it may well fix the issue.

I went to ask.fedoraproject.org and tried to log in. I got the same dialog I already showed in a screenshot here. I clicked to Create New Account. That got me in, presenting this as a new account, providing a welcome message from a bot, and listing no activity so far.

So, possibly, I have two accounts with the same username, legal name, and password; or an old account stopped working long ago, such as if part of your database was damaged. Sinced I had not supplied my legal name in a long time, probably years, the fact that the system knew my legal name meant that it was stored somewhere all this time and made visible after I supplied the username and the password. So, you had a record of an accoungt for me.

If there are now two accounts for me, can they be merged without losing the old history? I didn't add a history to the new one except for having logged in once and reading the welcome message, so I doubt we need to keep the new history as long as the old one is kept.

What should my next steps be? I'm not in a rush.

@Kevin, I looked around and you seem to be closely enough associated with Ask so that I didn't need to ask their permission in case that step would create two accounts for me.

ask changed from one provider to another several years ago. Previously it was an askbot system and then it was 'moved' to Discourse which its present system. Activity before this move was not uniformly moved over but seemed to have been done for the people who were active at that time.

Fedora Infrastructure did not administer the previous system and does not administer the current one. This means we do not know exactly how the move was done or what data was moved or not moved. @bcotton and @mattdm do you know how this was done?

I don't. @ankursinha or someone else from the Join SIG should know.

No information was moved from Askbot to Discourse---not forum data, not user data. Ask Fedora on Discourse was a completely new system that started from scratch.

I can see your AskFedora profile here, and nothing looks out of place:
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/u/nicklevinson/summary

It says it was created 3 hours ago, and last accessed 2 hours ago?

Here's what I tried:

  • In firefox on Fedora 32, I used a new private window
  • went to ask.fedoraproject.org
  • I click either on "log in" or "sign up", and they both take me to the Fedora ipsilon instance to enter my FAS username and password. At no point does it take me to this window you show in your screenshot.

Okay, now things make sense and my new account is probably okay to use. Thanks for the explanation. Among other things, it explained why I couldn't find my previous post/s lately, even though I'm pretty sure I posted long ago. There likely was a partial migraiton; or maybe there was a partial migration, an attempt to erase it was made, but it wasn't completely erased, which is why my real name was still displayed but my login didn't work.

@ankursinha: You say it said I accessed my account 2 hours before your post and created it 3 hours before your post. The creation time is about right. The access time is not, since I was offline then. But what you show in an activity image (3 & 3) is about right.

No, really, there was no migration. The previous AskFedora (askbot) and
the new one (Discourse) are completely different software and we dont even
have infra access to the Discourse instance to be able to import any data.
It is hosted by Discourse for us. So nothing, no users, no posts, nothing
at all was migrated. It started from 0, an empty database.

I dont currently understand the issue enough to be able to say what caused
it.
