#8879 packages web app is in a very poor state
Closed: Will Not/Can Not fix by smooge. Opened by spot.

The packages webapp (https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/) is in a very poor state.

To provide a specific example (thanks to Jeroen Ooms):

Look at R: https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/R

On that page, the "description" and "package tree" seem to describe a
very different package called "Racket". However on the same page, the
versions Active Releases Overview actually contains the latest
versions and links to R (the statistical programming language).

Additionally, lots of packages are missing from it.

My understanding is that there is currently no one maintaining this app, but if it's this wrong, perhaps we should just shut it off (whether or not we are working on a replacement).

For what it's worth, I am in the habit of sending people to https://src.fedoraproject.org/ these days to search for Fedora/EPEL packages. I also think shutting it off is better than providing false or bad data.

Also, a URL redirect is useful from apps.fp.o/packages/ to something like src.fp.o. This way, the original need to look up a Fedora package is still fulfilled, if they click an outdated hyperlink or bookmark.

First, we know. ;)

There's actually 2 ongoing plans related to this. @chkr is trying to fix the indexing script. This would allow us to have it update and fix some of the issues like the R one.

Also, there's someone working on replacing the entire app with a indexer/search engine and some templates. I am not sure where that effort is yet.

My hope is that we can fix the indexing soon/short term and that will carry us through until the replacement is ready.

We will be turning off the pkgs app in a couple of weeks when we move to the new data centre. There are a couple of projects working on replacing it that we will evaluate after the datacentre move.

For the time being, we are going to keep it running in SOL state as we don't have the bandwidth to cover the 'where did my app go, I know it was broken but I just used it for this one thing' that happens when we do that. After around the 15th of June it will get a nice trip to the farm in the upstate to play with the other apps.
