#8413 Please convert the scitech FAS group to a packager group
Closed: Fixed 4 years ago by kevin. Opened 4 years ago by ankursinha.

Could we please have the scitech FAS group converted into a packager group? We'd like to use it to share package maintenance responsibilities:

cc @orion @rathann

+1, I have 12 packages that I'd like to "donate" to the group.

So a couple of problems here:
1. The group currently contains a lot of people and I don't know who are packagers (which will be a prerequisite for a pkgdb group). Someone needs to inform the people who are not and 'kick' them out.
2. We don't normally convert groups but create a new one instead for people to put things in. I am not sure if converting a group causes problems or not and will need to research that.

I can create a new scitech_sig which is a pkgdb group and has packager as a prereq.

I'm fine with having a packager group called scitech_sig or similar if that's easier to achieve than converting the existing group.

Group scitech_sig has been created. I will see what steps are needed next

The group has been created on dist-git, so if you relog into src.fp.o your membership will be synced.

That being said, you should not (must not) add this group to any package before you create a bugzilla account for it (likely a private mailing list) and set the email address of that account as being the Mailing List.
You will likely need to keep the bugzilla notifications under moderation while you are setting it up.

@orion @rathann : should we create a new ML for the bug notifications? (We're seeing in the neuro-sig now that the notifications make it difficult to also use the same ML for discussions and notifications)

Note: the list should also be private (require approval to join) and private archives, or else security issues people report will be public before thats acceptable.

So, is there anything left to do here? Did you need a list made? Or is there outstanding setup with the account?

I think this can be closed. @ankursinha I thing a separate bug list would be good. I don't like mixing discussion and bug reports either. I'm afraid I'm quite pressed for time though so am hoping that someone else can take this on.

Sure, how about scitech-bugs@lists.fp.o? I can set it up on bugzilla etc. To confirm, once the mailing list is set up, I:

  • check that the archives are private
  • check that subscription is moderated
  • create a new bugzilla account using the mailing list e-mail as username, and set it as the e-mail address

Then, we start adding packages to the pagure group, and folks to the FAS group. Does that sound OK?

Great :)

Can we please have scitech-bugs@lists.fp.o set up for this?

Then I'll go set things up :)

List created!

let us know if you need anything further.

Thanks! The ML is set up, and a bugzilla account is set up too.

@rathann @orion : when you have a minute, could you please update the e-mail address for the FAS group to scitech-bugs@lists.fedoraproject.org? If you can subscribe to the list too, I can add you as admins there.

You should then be able to add packagers and packages to the group. When that's verified, we can send out an announcement to the MLs inviting people to join the FAS group and give the group co-maintainer privileges on their packages (but we'd better make it clear that the idea is for us to maintain packages together, not for folks to pass their packages on to the scitech group for maintenance).

@ankursinha I've changed the e-mail address and I've subscribed. I've also made you an admin on the FAS group. Thanks.

I think it's all set up now. I added @orion and @rathann as list owners.

  • I added scitech-bugs to an octave bug to test, and the mailing list received the notification from bugzilla just fine.
  • I also tried to give scitech_sig commit privileges on src.fp.o, and it showed up in the drop down so that's also OK now.

I'll go send out an e-mail inviting people to join the group now.

Thanks a lot, Ankur, Kevin and Orion.
