#8331 suggestions for improvements to upgrade instructions
Closed: Duplicate 4 years ago by smooge. Opened 4 years ago by bier.

I had some difficulty with the upgrade from Fedora-29 to Fedora-30 earlier this month (October 2019). There were multiple causes. The major ones are (I believe) out of the scope of fedora-infrastructure. One minor one is addressed here. I'm asking that the changes listed below be incorporated in the instructions for upgrading to Fedora-31 and later, if not already done.

  1. in the "Clean-Up Old Packages" section (page 4 in my print-out)

It would be better if the "Note" box (Run sudo dnf update first, ...) is located above the paragraph that starts "For packages from the official repositories, ...", and shows the "sudo dnf list extras" and "sudo dnf remove ..." commands. It would also be helpful if either this document or the sys. admin. guide would provide better guidance on figuring out what is or is not safe to remove. I did not quite know how to efficiently and effectively do this, and ended up punting this step.

comments:
1. I am a "home user", trained in neither operating systems nor sys. admin., but trying to properly maintain my stand-alone home workstation. Most people using the upgrade instructions and sys. admin. guide probably would not have the difficulties I had. But wouldn't Fedora management like to have more people using Fedora on home systems?
2. I anticipate I will not upgrade to Fedora-31 until early April 2020.

Thank you for putting these in but these do not fall under this groups work. I am going to close this as a duplicate of 8332
