#6948 Cannot signin to askbot using Fedora (FAS)
Closed: Upstream Opened by damonlynch.

Hi, I'm trying to sign in to https://ask.fedoraproject.org/
I have an account with Fedora (FAS).

When I go to sign in on askbot, on the "complete registration" page it says "this email is already used by someone else, please choose another".

Unfortunately the "Recover account" page does not work: clicking on the "recover email" button gives "Page not found". Clicking on the link "if you believe this error 404 should not have occured, please report this problem" also gives a 404!

I do believe I have used this service in previous years, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Thank you.

You may have perhaps not logged in via your Fedora account? You can login via facebook, g+, yahoo, openid or wordpress. Did you perhaps use one of those? Can you try and login with them?

If none of those work, perhaps @askbot can look into it. Can you mail support@askbot.com if you cannot get any of the other logins to work?

I am certain I'm logged in using my Fedora account -- it's that account I'm using right here. I also tried my openid from Ubuntu, which also failed. I'll email them as you suggest.

I will debug this tomorrow morning, sorry about the inconvenience.

I've tested on my account and it worked, account recovery as well.

@damonlynch what are your email address and the username on the ask site?

@askbot today I noticed there is a more than one account recovery option. When I tried the one I had not tried previously, it worked, I got the link in the email, and I was able to sign in. So perhaps you tried that one too, and it worked for you as well? Assuming so, it leaves the other account recovery option. When I tried that earlier today, it was still not working.

@damonlynch yes I meant recovering account by email. If you click any of the other buttons you'll be probably asked to create a new account and if the same email is entered as before, the system will tell that this address is taken.

I've enabled the recovery by email today.

The "other account recovery option" I'm referring to (whose URL I cannot locate anymore, because I can now sign in) is also a recovery by email option. The problem was that it was giving a 404. As of this morning, it was still giving a 404. I'm having a hard time recreating the exact steps, but what I do recall is that only today did I realize that from the home page (perahps?) there was another account recovery link, which worked the first time. I hope that's clear enough!

In any case, thanks for your help. I'm signed in now and it works.

@damonlynch yes that is very important to fix.

Was there an option to log in with password?

@askbot Yes. I would login with Fedora (FAS) option, then be presented with a username/email + password option, which would then fail, saying it already existed. I would then click on the recover email option that that page gave, which would take me to a new page. As I recall, the URL did not change even though a new page appeared. When entering the email and clicking the button, the 404 would come up. Now that I go through it in my mind, I'm confident that's what happened.

@damonlynch ok, I think I have an idea how to test.

In your case you might first recover account by email, then once logged in go to your user profile -> click on "manage login methods" and then authenticate with FAS.
This way FAS authentication will be associated with your account - worked for me today.

@damonlynch thanks for reporting the details!
