#648 Hosting request for Ekushey Fonts Project
Closed: Fixed None Opened 15 years ago by nim.

I'm opening this in the behalf of angel since he has some problems with track (low-bandwidth connection timeouts)

Project Name: Ekushey Fonts

Ekushey is the Unicode based Bengali fonts. They were built from scratch. And released under GPL and OFL. Now I want to make these fine fonts easily available on Fedora.

Font list:

  1. Solaiman Lipi
  2. Rupali
  3. Ekushey Lohit
  4. Ekushey Sharifa
  5. Ekushey Punarbhaba
  6. Ekushey Sumit
  7. Ekushey Durga
  8. Ekushey Saraswati
  9. Ekushey Puja
  10. Ekushey Azad
  11. Ekushey Godhuli
  12. Ekushey Mohua

SCM choice (git/hg/svn): svn

You're all set

Anon: http://svn.fedorahosted.org/svn/ekushey-fonts/

writeable: svn+ssh://svn.fedorahosted.org//svn/ekushey-fonts/

There seem to be some known doubts about the originality
of some of the Ekushey fonts: eg

http://omicronlab.com/forum/Font-Piracy-by-Ekushey-Group-t392.html

Please hold this project hosting until we can clarify this issue.

Unfortunately most of the posts on that site appear to be in Bengali. I don't believe that there are any Fedora Infrastructure folks that read Bengali so it's a little hard for us to figure what's going on.

Indeed but it would be embarrassed if fedorahosted were to
hold data of uncertain origin. I am just suggesting
caution and recommending to freeze this project for the time
being.

Angel, do you have any comments?

I can point out atleast one problem here. Lohit fonts were released by Red Hat under GPL and is currently hosted at

https://fedorahosted.org/lohit

Even ignoring any trademark concerns, a derivative of Lohit cannot be relicensed under OFL without the explicit approval of the copyright holders. Looks like this font family does have questionable origins.

Just to clarify Rahul's comment, since I missed the meaning initially - he is referring to one of the Ekushey fonts being a derivative of a Lohit font but relicensed under OFL apparently.

We have now confirmation from several Bengali members in the L10N community (forwarded to Jens petersen) that this set of fonts have a long history of plagiarism or questionable origin of glyphs and it would not be advisable to host or support them in any way.

Replying to [comment:2 petersen]:

Thanks for these comments, the SVN repo that Mike created has had zero commits so I've disabled write access to it. If the issue can be resolved it just needs a recursive chgrp on it, otherwise, we can delete it.

Unfortunately after all this time we've not hear any clarification from the Ekushey group so the whole thing should be deleted

I am going to delete these repos

The svn repo has been deleted.
The support fas group has also been removed.

Let me know if you need anything else.
