When I was in Bulgaria for OpenFest someone asked me why is obligatory to put our mobile number when we open a new FAS Account and where goes all this data? I'd like to have an answer about this to reply to that person.

My understanding is that this information:

  • Is collected in case there's some urgent need to contact a contibutor (legal or otherwise)
  • Is never shared, or even accessed unless requested by fedora legal (or in the course of duties of the sysadmin groups to ensure backup, data integrity, etc)

Perhaps @spot to correct or expand on the above?

And perhaps we could update the privacy policy page with the information?

We ask for a phone number so that we have a mechanism to contact you, should it become necessary for us to need to do so. To date, this has never been necessary. We consider your phone number to be "Personal Information", but not "Publicly Available Personal Information", as described in the Fedora Privacy Policy:
