The self-signed root certificate 'Fedora Project CA' for pkgs.fedoraproject.org is untrusted by firefox. I followed a google link to https://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/.... and was blocked by firefox security warning.

yeah, this is, at this time completely expected.

Short answer: Maintainers upload source to pkgs with ssl certs as their authentication. This requires it to run our private CA. We have several things in the works to change this and move it to a normal CA. See in particular:

We hope to make these changes on or around december 12th.
