#3864 Publish zodbot's IRC logs?
Closed: Fixed None Opened 10 years ago by puiterwijk.

We got some questions from people regarding getting IRC logs from zodbot.

Do we want to publish these on our website, or make them available on request?

This ticket is meant for discussion and as official way to mark it as meeting-subject.

I'll toss in my 2 cents now... more feedback welcome here or in the next meeting:

  • We already do publish some logs... the meetings. However thats pretty clear that it's being logged and to be published.

  • Freenode says this about logs:

"If you're considering publishing channel logs, think it through. The freenode network is an interactive environment. Even on public channels, most users don't weigh their comments with the idea that they'll be enshrined in perpetuity. For that reason, few participants publish logs.

If you're publishing logs on an ongoing basis, your channel topic should reflect that fact. Be sure to provide a way for users to make comments without logging, and get permission from the channel owners before you start. If you're thinking of "anonymizing" your logs (removing information that identifies the specific users), be aware that it's difficult to do it well—replies and general context often provide identifying information which is hard to filter.

If you just want to publish a single conversation, be careful to get permission from each participant. Provide as much context as you can. Avoid the temptation to publish or distribute logs without permission in order to portray someone in a bad light. The reputation you save will most likely be your own."

For that reason I think we should only publish meeting logs, and should remove the ChannelLogger plugin from zodbot entirely.

This would be perfectly fine for me, since I don't need them.
I just want a clear policy on this matter, so I know what to say to people asking where we store the logs.

Wouldn't we HAVE to notify on logging so people have the opportunity to opt out? Otherwise couldn't they invoke copyright over their typed statements?

You might be able to invoke fair use but I agree with the general sentiment that keeping logs outside of meetings seems like we get into too much responsibility for too little gain.

We decided to remove the ChannelLogger plugin and remove all logs.
