#12780 Fedora avatar service is too slow or not responding
Closed: Upstream by kevin. Opened by xvitaly.

seccdn.libravatar.org is too slow or not responding at all. Avatars in all Fedora projects are broken and slow down page loading.

I'm not sure if we can do anything about that, I don't think we have any control over libravatar.org.

I let them know on their matrix channel.

Yes, we don't manage or run it, we just provide cloud resources to run it for those that do.

We did recently provision a bigger instance, but I don't think it's in service yet.

I'm not sure if we can/should track this here, or point to some upstream place.

Thanks for tagging me.
Yes, we're aware of the performance issues and I'm actively working on getting the service migrated. Given the fact that the old deployment wasn't automated and containerized, this effort takes way longer than anticipated, but I should be done in the coming ways. I'm currently finishing one last component (caching layer) that should help massively with reducing the load on the new service. Once that's done I can already start migrating the database and then redirect the load to the new server. Apologies this is taking so long.

No worries. please let us know if there's anything we can do from this side.

Is there any place you are tracking this work that we could point people to?

Otherwise, I'll let you get back to it...

What a journey folks...

We should be up'n'running on the new service now. I see problems with our (beta) bluesky proxy that I need to investigate further and it seems I broke the functionality of assigning avatars to OpenIDs - another thing I need to investigate, but fetching existing assignments should work fine.

If you encounter any troubles, please let me know.

At least the performance should be MUCH better now.

Thanks @oliver !

Thanks @oliver !

Absolutely nothing to thank me for!

BTW, IPv6 is now working as well.

The old instance still contains some data that I need to backup, but we‘ll soon be able to shut it down!

Sorry for not getting back earlier... We can now shut down the old instance (54.83.245.205).
Cheers!
