#12268 COPR group creation request - haunted ARM SoCs
Closed: Fixed a month ago by zlopez. Opened a month ago by neggles.

Describe what you would like us to do:

Hi team! I and some others are working on a set of packages bringing support for various mildly cursed ARM SoCs and peripherals that are not yet suitable for support in Fedora proper (though we aim to change that where practical). We'd like to provide some COPR repos for kernels and DKMS drivers, custom mesa builds etc. for people to use, and would like to do this under a group to simplify maintenance and enable others to contribute more easily.

Could you create a COPR/tracking group named one of the following? I'm not sure what the policy is on group naming, if none of the below are acceptable please feel free to choose whatever name you feel is appropriate.

  • cursed-socs
  • haunted-soc/esoteric-soc/exotic-soc
  • very-unsupported / violently-unsupported or something similar?
  • phytium-fans / phytium-socs (initially we're targeting Phytium ARM SoCs, so this would be fine, but the intent is to cover a wider range of hardware so something more generic might be better)

Any of the above with -sig attached or similar would be fine too.

Of course, if you feel this isn't an appropriate use of COPR groups feel free to close this and we'll happily keep using personal repos

Thanks!

When do you need this to be done by? (YYYY/MM/DD)

No huge rush but soon would be appreciated :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I don't think there is any issue with exotic-soc group name, so I would go with that.

And following question, who should be sponsor of the group?

exotic-soc-sig might be more in keeping with the general rules? though I believe sig isn't required anymore.

For the meantime it would just be myself and @mothenjoyer69 though we intend on bringing more people in as they express interest; this is a rather niche thing. We don't have any companies behind us at the moment though there are some developers with access to vendor documentation who are supporting in a personal capacity.

As an aside, it may worth using a name that makes it obvious this is not anything officially supported by any given vendor/org. Goal is to have a group that we (and other community members who are interested) can keep various COPR projects for kernel packages, modifications to mesa, etc. under so it's easier to find and simpler to maintain as a group, rather than being scattered across a number of disjoint personal accounts.

Personally I'm a fan of rather tongue-in-cheek names like violently-unsupported but something like exotic-soc-community might be more appropriate. That or I'm overthinking this

That wouldn't be a problem, Fedora is a community project, so the groups here are by default unofficial. You can add something to description of the group if you want.

Fair point! Thanks for the clarification. exotic-soc sounds good to me then

The group is now in place https://accounts.fedoraproject.org/group/exotic-soc/ with you and @mothenjoyer69 as sponsors.

Feel free to reopen the ticket if something is missing.
