From which IP are you running dnf update?

Please also share /var/log/dnf.librepo.log.

The expected checksum is correct and MirrorManager returns the correct value. It seems you are redirected to a broken mirror. But then dnf should go to the next.

Looks like it might be a zchunk issue?

@jdieter might know more about the error?

Normally "Unable to read zchunk lead" means that the file is damaged/corrupted near the very beginning, though, as Adrian pointed out, it should fail over to the next mirror. Is this an infra server? If so, is there any way I can get access to troubleshoot further?

So you want the entire log file, or just entries from today?

Just the entries from today.

With that IP address you get lot's of mirrors which are up to date. That at least is a good thing to know.

I did some Googling in the meantime, and came up with a temporary workaround. I changed "fastestmirror=True", .fastestmirror=False" in the dnf.conf file, but that had been set to true for ages with no issues till today.

So did a "dnf clean all" and then "dnf update" and got a new error:

It's not fully clear yet some of the events. ;(

  • The person who used to update this has moved to another group.
  • The SOP (standard operating procedure) for doing this update was incorrect/out of date/wrong.
  • Current update used the wrong process in the SOP and unsigned rpms were sent instead of signed ones.
  • Something caused a zchunk error (the first one you saw, but perhaps this was just out of date repodata?)
  • Something caused mirrormanager to not update for the new repodata.
  • When updated, it started seeing the new unsigned rpms and gave an error about that.

I've pushed repodata that just points to the older h264 version thats signed (in f36/f37) and empty repodata (rawhide/f38). It my testing everything is back to working.

I've submitted a PR to update the SOP.

It happened again today. Oddly enough I was able to update via PackageKit.

But sadly it doesn't explain the cause. ;( That file is of course not 0 length on the mirrors and in fact hasn't changed any since Fedora 36 was 'go' on May 4th.

I assume you have disk space?

This is only an occasional occurrence. It first started 3 days ago, after which I created this ticket. As you may recall, you tracked down the problem(s) and got them fixed later in the day.

Everything was working fine since then (I check for updates several times a day) till today.

I've happened upon two workarounds, one of which I temporarily used a few days ago till the issue was then resolved,

I changed fastestmirror=True to fastestmirror=false in dnf.conf ,and that fixed the problem. But I undid that later in the day after the issues on your end were corrected.

I re-did it today, and the problem went away, but I don't intend for it to be a permanent fix, when it's otherwise been unnecessary for weeks (I did a fresh install of Fedora 36 a few months ago).

Somone today suggested adding zchunk=false to the dnf.conf file as another workaround. So, I gave it a shot, and it fixed the issue. But these aren't long-term fixes.

As for my disk space, I have plenty.

I think the whole problem started with fastestmirror=True. This should not bet set. This breaks dnf, because it keeps redirecting you to a broken mirror. Is is still set?

I've since read that it's not a good idea to use it at all, while others recommend it.

If It breaks DNF, then I wonder why it's even an option?

Right now I have:

zchunk=False

I changed to that approximently 16 hours ago (as of this writing) and I'm no longe having updae problems. But in light of what you've said here, I'll switch that around.

fastestmirror=True does not make sense in combination with metalinks and should not be used. In combination with metalinks DNF must have the possibility to skip a potential broken mirror and you take that away with fastestmirror=True.

Just to note... there's actually 3 seperate problems here:

  1. h264 codecs repo was updated and mirrormanager hadn't updated so the metadata showed mismatch. This affected everyone with that repo enabled, and has long since been fixed.

  2. The new h264 repo pointed to rpms that were unsigned, giving everyone with that repo enabled a error. This also has been fixed, first by pushing out new repodata that doesn't refer to the new builds, and longer term by deploying the signed rpms out to cisco.

  3. Finally the zchunk error you were seeing. I have only ever seen one other report of this, so I think the idea that it's caused by fastestmirror pointing you to a broken mirror sounds correct. Perhaps we could ask dnf folks to warn loudly on this combination of options? ie, "You have set fastestmirror True, but are using metalinks, this is a combo that may not work well"

So, hopefully we have everything figured out here. Thanks for your patience @scottbeamer and thanks for reporting things. :)

Interesting. Those files that gave a 404 for you are in fact there on the mirror now... is this the mirror you usually get?

The mirrors vary. I don't know what one I usually get because successful downloads don't tell me where they came from (one thing I like about apt).

A few minutes later, I got successful downloads/installs.

I'm at a loss for what could be happening here with the zchunk data.

I guess it could be that mirror was right in the process of syncing and had copied over the normal repodata, but hadn't yet copied the *.zck files? But that should be a very very very small window.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

My guess is something similar with various mirrors not presenting them correctly which would show up a lot for CI jobs which are running continuously. Is there a zchunk=0 flag in dnf which could turn off this?

Well, it's not that it's not showing them properly, the last issue above they were 404... not found on the mirror at all. Then, by the time I looked they were there and working fine.

Yes, as noted 'zchunk=false' in dnf.conf will disable zchunk.

Just an update, I've had no issues since the one mentioned in my previous comment from 8 days ago. Updates have been working like they're supposed to.

Was this that same mirror? (you should be able to look into /var/log/dnf.librepo.log )

I had to did deep. That was back on September 8th.

http://mirror.arizona.edu/ seemed to be the culprit.

As of this moment, I've not had any problems since then.

HOw are things since the last comment here?

I still wish I knew what caused you (but almost no one else) the zchunk header issues. ;(

It has popped up very briefly a few times, but it corrects itself after
switching mirrors.

I'm not sure what else there is for us to fix here.

Can you file a new ticket if this ever appears more than very briefly and we can try and isolate it further.
