#10545 Assistance during libravatar system upgrade
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by mobrien. Opened 2 years ago by clime.

Describe what you would like us to do:

Hello, I would like to upgrade libravatar server (libravatar.org) from Fedora 33 to Fedora 35. It's running in AWS cloud. Because I can't just swap images (no access to AWS console), the best action seems to be to do the upgrade from inside the running image. I would like, however, if someone would be around during upgrade if something goes wrong. I assume, one can access VM in AWS by KVM (i.e. through some internal console in AWS admin interface) so that would be handy if something goes wrong during upgrade and there is no ssh.

If I could coordinate with someone at a specific time on this, it would be great.

@mobrien I heard you are interested in helping out on this ticket, can you work with @clime to find a date/time.

THanks.

@clime Not sure if you prefer here or irc so I'll ask on both.

When would you like to organise the update of libravatar server? would you like to do it tomorrow sometime between 10:00UTC and 13:00UTC or next week? I'm normally available from 10:00UTC - 17:00UTC

Yes, tomorrow e.g. at 13:00UTC would be great.

Ok great. We can do it at 13:00UTC tomorrow

@clime in preparation for this you will need to set a root password to enable access to the serial console. simply run sudo passwd root and enter the password. As referenced here https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/configure-access-to-serial-console.html#set-user-password

Without this serial console access is not much good as nothing can be done without logging in.

Also about 15 mins before we start I will take a snapshot of the ebs volume as a backup in case we need to rollback for some reason

Ok, thanks, I have setup the root password.

@clime where would you like to communicate?

The snapshot is still running so if you haven't kicked off the update yet please wait a couple of mins

The server has been upgraded succesfully to F35
