#10140 Expired certificate on askbot.fedoraproject.org
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by kevin. Opened 2 years ago by ngompa.

Describe what you would like us to do:

The certificate on askbot.fedoraproject.org is expired, preventing access to the archive.

Cf. https://askbot.fedoraproject.org/en/question/117433/installation-and-drivers-for-asus-t102ha/

When do you need this to be done by? (YYYY/MM/DD)

ASAP.

Sadly, we can't do anything about this. This dns name points to the old read-only outsourced askbot instance. We have no control over the certs.

We can of course ask them to renew... or we could just drop the hostname from dns, but there's a bunch of old links that point to there.

Hi @kevin , who is actually the provider of this service. Can you point the rest of us to some tracker?

The provider was a 'service' we outsourced several years ago to I believe https://askbot.com/ (we had been trying to run our own copy but did not have the resources to do so.) Later this was 'moved' to the current discource service. The resource is being run by the original company at their own expense and could disappear at any time. However moving and duplicating it is a major project in itself with no funding, time or volunteers to do.

It looks like the service is not alive anymore, some links on the https://askbot.com/ are returning 404 (https://askbot.org/doc/index.html) and the last activity on support forum is year old. So the best option in this case is to remove the service from infra.

So, yeah, perhaps it's time to just drop the dns entry. ;(

@ankursinha Any thoughts? can we drop askbot.fedoraproject.org now?

Yeh, I'm totally +1 for dropping it. It's been read only for a while and everyone should've shifted to the new forum already. There's some info on askbot that may still be relevant but we've never had the resources to migrate/save it---so the plan was always that someday, when upstream no longer wanted to keep the archives, askbot would go away.

About broken links---can we maybe redirect askbot.fp.o urls to ask.fp.o? At least that way folks will get to the new forum and can ask new questions there (even if they get a 404 initially).

@mattdm : would you have any concerns with dropping it?

Any of theses are okay with me, in order of preference:

  1. Redirect https?://askbot.fedoraproject.org/.* to a post on new Ask explaining what happened
  2. Redirect same to https://ask.fedoraproject.org/
  3. Just drop it

Yeah, we can do any of those. Of course #3 is easiest. ;)

But lets go with your pref and do number 1. @ankursinha can you make a ask post explaining the final retirement of askbot.fedoraproject.org and let us know the url here?
We can then:
Change dns to point askbot to proxies
add a redirect to the ask post for it.
* profit

@ankursinha Your message seems great and I don't think needs any edits.

The redirect is now in place.

Let us know if there's anything further to adjust.
