#279 User research + analysis for regional hubs feature
Opened 7 years ago by duffy. Modified 6 years ago

We need to better understand user needs + problems to solve WRT the regional hubs feature (issue #47). We'll need to interview folks currently engaged in regional events including ambassadors, flock planners, and campus ambassadors. The output of this ticket should be an analysis of the user data collected with suggestions for the high-level design of the feature.

Will finish the initial interviews this afternoon, and will be doing affinity mapping analysis on Thursday.

During this afternoon's meeting, we discussed the results of my interviews, looking for patterns and problems, and delving deeper into many of the overarching concepts we identified. I will attach the anonymized interview summaries, patterns and workflows, and pains/comments documents I created before the meeting. When I have them, I will also attach the whiteboard photos that Mo took.

Mo and I will do affinity mapping on these later today, using https://realtimeboard.com/app/board/o9J_k0yF_VU=/.

I have also created some sketches (for my own thinking purposes) and Balsamiq mockups of:

Mo and I just did some affinity mapping of the problems I'd identified, using realtimeboard.com. The goal was to group the problems however we thought made sense, identify those groupings, and sort the results based on severity and numbers of people affected.

The chat log and PDF of the whiteboards are attached below:

@wispfox and I just met today for a 2 hour brainstorming session. From the affinity mapping exercise, we identified budget mgmt and local resource findability / scalability as being the highest priority. During our brainstorm we decided focusing on budget mgmt was out of scope for regional hubs and it should really focus on findability / scalability of resources. We used meetbot to take minutes and used #action items to mark needed mockups.

@wispfox will work on a blog post summarizing the brainstorm session tomorrow and will start mocking up some of the #action items and #ideas we had.

I've been working on mockups, and will start developing tasks to do with those mockups. I need to do some prototype testing with my interviewees, so will need to contact them once I start identifying tasks, their priority, and how possible they are to do with what I have mocked up.

I have started prototyping the mockups, and have done two remotely with another remote one and two in-person prototype sessions pending. I will start transcribing the sessions soon, and begin looking for patterns for analysis once those are complete. For more on this, see the summary post (https://medium.com/@suzannehillman/sometimes-its-good-to-stop-worrying-about-the-world-and-just-work-on-my-internship-b15768b94eb3#.11zp8b87a).

I completed a feasibility analysis session with the lead developer on the mockups that were available at the time (they were done enough for the purposes of feasibility analysis): master list of Fedora people (ticket #280), master list of events (ticket #281), notifications (ticket #282), joining regional hubs (ticket #287), and location information (ticket #286).

The latter had turned into an unexpectedly complicated problem before I even met with the developer (https://medium.com/@suzannehillman/locations-are-hard-8965a6ff0ea1#.4tgiagkkt), and the feasibility analysis spawned a new ticket to figure out how Hubs would suggest new regional hubs (ticket #298).

I also created tickets that I do not expect to do during this internship, but which were clearly necessary to keep in mind around this project: public-facing pages (ticket #285), event creation (ticket #299), bringing people back to hubs (ticket #297), master list of regional hubs (ticket #296).

Usability sessions with 5 participants completed, transcribed, summarized. Preliminary analysis performed with @duffy. Attached are the spreadsheet used to organize key points, and the anonymized transcripts.

(I know this is an Excel document; I'm sorry, I was worried I'd lose info if I translated it to something else)
