#250 Proposing a quick doc for setting up zoom on fedora
Closed: complete 3 years ago by pbokoc. Opened 3 years ago by sumantrom.

Zoom is being used for a lot of video conferences. Having a doc for setting up Zoom App on fedora will help a lot of people to get started.

I think this is perhaps a better magazine post than a quick-doc?

A quick doc would be more general: "video meeting tools for Fedora", and perhaps should start with FOSS alternatives like jitsi before moving on to proprietary (and perhaps insecure) platforms like zoom?

I personally want this as a quick doc. I have needed it for people who are new Linux users and are looking for best practices on setting up video conferencing software. I like @ankursinha's idea that a quick doc should be more general, e.g. "video meeting tools for Fedora" and it can have a specific section on Zoom.

I sort of think this doc should mention a lot of Flatpak. :-) I have used the Zoom Flatpak from Flathub over the last couple of months and it has worked pretty well on Fedora 31/32.

Hrm, is this on Wayland? The Flatpak wasn't working for me, so I had to fallback to the rpm from the website. Not tested it out recently now (but this is the kind of thing that needs to be verified if we're going to include this into user documentation)

I am using x11. Good catch.

So, a bit of background for all of you, I took a video session yesterday and one of the person is interested picking this up. Would anyone of you will be so kind to guide him?

So, I used the RPM and did a dnf install on wayland which worked fine on F32. The flatpak does crash on my wayland still.

Sure. I'm happy to do that. They can just copy this quick doc and modify it for zoom:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/installing-and-running-vlc/

If they need help with the PR process etc, could you ask them to contact us using the ML or the channel, or even this ticket here would work.

@sumantrom : just checking: is the volunteer working on this? Could you ask them to comment here too, so we can help them out?

Screen sharing does not work satisfactorily in Wayland (I spent countless hours frenzied during my paired coding interviews trying to figure out why Zoom ends up showing black screen from my end to the other side when I finally thought of switching to X11 and voila it worked!) so that might be one thing to note in the coming quick-doc.

Also, we can write a magazine post about the same and lead them to the quick-docs - hence getting some of that attention here as well.

That's very odd. Fedora 32 gnome on wayland here---screen sharing etc. all works just fine on Zoom. Are you on an nvidia machine? :P

I am on an NVIDIA machine, yes but I am using the integrated card as the screen tearing in proprietary driver almost drives me nuts. It always ends up showing a black screen and deferred video feedback on-screen capture when using Wayland. The same is persistent even with Google Meet like it is in Zoom.

I still remember during the project proposition that I was making to @siddharthvipul1, I had to quickly log back out - switch to X11 and log back in just so I could share my screen effectively on Meet.
