#156 New quick-doc: Differences between Fedora and other popular distros
Closed: stale a year ago by pboy. Opened 4 years ago by pbokoc.

It could be useful to have a doc that describes high level differences between Fedora and other popular distros like Arch, Ubuntu, or Debian. If someone wants to pick that up, go ahead and knock yourself out :).

I can tackle this, though somebody will have to double-check any claims I make about Ubuntu. I haven't used that since 8.04 ...

So what shall we consider high-level?

Obviously design philosophy (strict open source etc.), target audience and release cycle/update strategy. I'd also include package management, since despite being technical, it is such an integral part of any distribution & users will interact with it, a lot.

Anything else? Maybe major derivates - I think Fedora's approach of keeping derivates "in house" (Fedora Spins/Silverblue/CoreOS/etc) is rather different than the wild west of Ubuntu forks.

@lcts Hi, thanks for offering to work on this. Your list seems like a good start, including the derivatives. I'd also mention the installer if there are significant differences (I haven't installed another distro in a few years but at least back then Anaconda was pretty unique), supported technologies (like filesystems, if there's a major distro that doesn't use systemd, I'd point that out as well, etc.)...

We don't need to cover everything at once, we can always add to the doc later.

@pbokoc is your idea being worked on? If not, we may retire and close the issue.

Personally, I don't think it is worth documenting the differences between Fedora Linux and other distros (where do you stop?). Almost anything that is relevant to install and run Fedora is documented - why document the differences to other distros.

Obviously, nobody worked on it. So we can close the issue now.
