#6 Separate footer for packaging guidelines
Opened 5 years ago by tibbs. Modified 3 years ago

Relatively recently, a footer was added to all pages on the docs site which says:

Want to help? Learn how to contribute to Fedora Docs.

However, for the packaging guidelines pages, it would be far more useful to have this say something like:

Want to report a problem or submit new guidelines? File a ticket.

Is there any way we can override the footer ourselves? Barring that, is there any way to get a special footer applied?

That makes sense.

There's no way how to do that now, I'd have to look how to get that implemented in the UI.

Another option would simply be to allow us to suppress the footer.

Each page already has an "Edit this Page" link, which is nice and sort of gets us half way there. Adding a similar link for filing a bug against the page would be all we'd need, but I don't know if there's an easy way to fit it in.

Right, because people won't be typically just editing the packaging guidelines, they'd rather suggest changes that could be discussed later. Interesting!

In fairness, one good way of presenting those suggested changes for consideration and opening them up for discussion is exactly to just edit the guidelines — specifically, by using "Edit this page" to make changes in a fork, and then opening a PR against the upstream.

Not everyone will be comfortable writing asciidoc of course, so other methods should be available as well. But using the "Edit this page" link isn't really "editing the page" (except for those few with commit access), and users shouldn't be any more reluctant to use it with the Packaging Guidelines than on any other page. For users who are comfortable, opening a PR with a concrete set of edits to the document source is preferable to filing a bug and discussing changes in the abstract. Ultimately someone has to do the actual work of making those edits.

In fact, maybe the link should even be "Propose edits to this page" or "Fork and edit this page", to make the process less intimidating.
