#29 Should we include fedora-bootstrap or similar? WAS: Prefer open source fonts
Closed 5 years ago Opened 6 years ago by mattdm.

We're inheriting

"Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial

from bootstrap. None of these are open source fonts. Among other things, this means that Fedora users will have a different experience than the default offered on proprietary operating systems which bundle these fonts.

It seems like Overpass would be a nice choice (provided as a web font so systems without it installed get the same look), but I won't bikeshed over which font.

@ryanlerch Can you help us update this to reflect the changes in fedora-bootstrap, which I suspect will also fix the fonts issue?

Can we make this easier to keep in line with fedora-bootstrap?

Right now, looks like asciibinder is using upstream bootstrap — see this template file. I tried dropping in the Fedora version, but everything got all ugly. (For example, margins vanished where asciibinder expects them, and the background of everything became gray.)

I think either way we'll end up having tweaks to the asciibinder css. It might be easier to just make font and other basic design changes there in the first place and stick with upstream bootstrap, but I'll leave it to @ryanlerch which way is best.

font issue resolved in PR #34 - bootstrap question remains awaiting guidance from @ryanlerch

From a Fedora brand & websites POV, for Fedora websites the body typeface should be Open Sans and the headline / secondary typeface should be Montserrat.

@mattdm yeah fedora-bootstrap is based on bootstrap v4 -- so the results you are seeing are "expected" in a way :)

I can have a look at trying to do an asciibinder theme using fedora-bootstrap.

@duffy That seems fine to me. I like Monserrat, especially with the recent redrawn weights. And I can live with Open Sans. :)

@ryanlerch That'd be awesome.

@ryanlerch Note that there are some changes we've made locally in https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/docs-fp-o/commits/ — I'd like those to keep working :)

This bug is related to asciibinder and is being closed as we have moved to antora.
