Event logistics

  • Date: 2019-09-29
  • Location: Tirana, Albania
  • Organizer(s): Mariana Balla (@marianab)
  • First time organizing a FWD event?: No
  • Estimated number of attendees: 15

About your event

What kind of people do you expect to attend?
We are expecting to have computer science students, but also ladies from other fields other than tech. The event will be hosted at the local open source community (https://openlabs.cc/en/).

What do you plan to cover in the agenda for your FWD event?
A few topics we would like to include on our event are:
- Introduction to the Fedora Project (some characteristics of the OS and the community of people behind it)
- What is Open Source Diversity / What does the D&I within Fedora do / The importance of having diverse communities consisted of people coming from different cultures and backgrounds
- The challenges of having diverse communities (how to build a such, how to educate people to accept others and tips on how to deal with the fact that you are trying to join a community that is not that "open" when it comes to people that are different than the majority
- Showcase the "A computer of One's Own" project. (https://medium.com/a-computer-of-ones-own)

Are there any questions you have for the D&I Team?

No :)

Anything you want us to know?
No

Budget request

  • Light drinks/water : $10.00 USD
  • Snacks/pizza : $35.00 USD (chances are this might be a little lower as it depends a lot on the number of people that are going to show up but just in case I'm putting this number)

  • FINAL TOTAL: $45 USD

I am +1 for this request knowing the background of organizer.

@tatica @jflory7 @bee2502 @jonatoni What is your vote for this request please?

On the above proposal I wanted to add that with the organization of the event, @juela will help as well. She is a new contributor in open source and I asked her to help in order to get her more exposed in open source related events.

Also, it would be great if we have a final decision on our request in order to start promoting locally our event as the date is approaching. :)

Thanks

@marianab who will be speaking at the event?

Hi @marianab, thank you for proposing another FWD event this year! Last year's event report was helpful. I am +1 to this proposal but have a couple questions:

  1. Are you and @juela expecting newcomers to this session or repeat visitors from last year?
  2. What parts of Fedora do you think most interest your audience?

These questions help me better understand how FWD fits in your community.

@marianab who will be speaking at the event?

As this is going to be a "short" event (we expect to last 2 hours with a 15 minutes break in between) there is no large list of speakers. The structure we have in mind is as follows:
- A presentation of the hackerspace (Myself)
- An introduction of the Fedora Project - the subgroups within the project and the operating system (Myself)
- Open Source Diversity - D & I team within the Fedora Project - What is FWD (@juela & myself)
- Go through https://whatcanidoforfedora.org/ and try to see where everyone fits (@nafieshehu)

1.Are you and @juela expecting newcomers to this session or repeat visitors from last year?

Unfortunatelly I was not able to attend FWD Tirana last year beacause I was not in Tirana at that time but as far as I can remember the event was held in a school. So, my guess is that we will not have the same people attending. The event will be promoted on the hackespace's media channels, so the peole we are expecting are fans of open source.

  1. What parts of Fedora do you think most interest your audience?

As I mendtioned above, we are going to go throungh https://whatcanidoforfedora.org and find out what the attendees are most intrested. At first we had the idea of doing some bug hunting on the beta release and explain the importance of QA but it seems that this might require more time than 2 hours. We are considering to have an event dedicated to this in October.

I see three +1's on this ticket. Does this mean that this is approved?

@nikhilkathole absolutely! Thanks for letting me know about the document.

Here you can find my report regarding FWD 2019 - Tirana: https://marianaballa.com/Fedora-Women-Day-2019-Tirana/

During the event we had a girl who interviewed many of the participants, including me (she was a journalist). I'd be happy to share her article once I have a link.

Thanks for the report, Mariana. Can you share the feedback form at least with the people you know from the participants (including yourself and Juela)? It is very important for us to know how useful was the event for the attendees and what we can improve.

For the reimbursements please open a ticket here: https://pagure.io/fedora-budget/new_issue

I filled the form and asked others to do the same. Also, I just created a new ticket for reimbursement.
