#15 FWD 2019 Proposal -Allahabad, India - https://orionstar25.github.io/fwd-19/
Closed: complete 4 years ago by jonatoni. Opened 4 years ago by orionstar25.

Event logistics

  • Date: Between 2019-10-10 to 2019-10-15
  • Location: Allahabad, India
  • Organizer(s): Niharika Shrivastava, orionstar25
  • First time organizing a FWD event?: Yes
  • Estimated number of attendees: 50-60

About your event

What kind of people do you expect to attend?

This will be organized at my university. Students of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year will come for this. They will mostly be Fedora newbies but coders.

What do you plan to cover in the agenda for your FWD event?

  • About Fedora and its presence in the open-source community.
  • Best tools for each area (https://labs.fedoraproject.org/)
  • Perks of contributing to Fedora as part of open-source programmes
  • My internship experience with Fedora Modularity as part of Outreachy, 2019
  • Success cases on female working with OpenSource inside Fedora
  • What can I do to contribute to the Fedora Community? (http://whatcanidoforfedora.org/

Budget request

I don't have any budget request but I do have some resources request:

  • Exhaustive list of various scholarships, awards, conferences, events provided and hosted by Fedora and RedHat. (digitial list works)
  • A slideshow of all women in Fedora and what work they're doing. Could also be a small 1-minute video of a woman of Fedora/Red Hat speaking. @jonatoni I'd really like you to speak for this!
  • Some swags, stickers shipped here would be highly appreciated!

Hey @orionstar25, thanks for proposing a FWD event this year! And props for being the first proposal of the year. :grinning: The acceptance deadline is Friday, 6 September, 2019, so you will have a final answer no later than that date.

I like the agenda you put together. To make sure I understand, for open-source programmes, do you mean Fedora Summer Coding mentored projects (e.g. GSoC/Outreachy)?

Also, on the Fedora D&I team's side, is there anything we can do to help you promote your event or come up with content? In previous years, we put together a resource pack with some talking points. We haven't updated it yet, but we will in the next 1-2 months.

If you have any ideas or a wishlist of things that would be useful for you, we can try to include them in the resource pack. Let us know your thoughts!

Yes, also Outreachy happens in December too. So that would be mentioned as well.

My target audience is CS undergraduates and they would mostly be interested in:
1) How to start contributing to Fedora.
2) Various scholarships, awards, conferences, events provided and hosted by Fedora and RedHat.
3) Internship and job opportunities in Fedora and RedHat.

If there could be an exhaustive list of such events and opportunities in the resource pack or any kind of brochures to hand out for reference, that would be great!

I will also be able to host a live video call for max 15 minutes during the FWD event. It could be a great way to make this event interactive and authentic. So if anyone from the Fedora community is willing to give their first-hand experience to a bunch of university students (and handle their questions too!), that would be lovely :rabbit:

For physical copies of brochures, we can coordinate with the Fedora Marketing Team. I believe they have something for this already. We might be able to distribute it in time for FWD but it is hard to say just yet.

As for a list of events and conferences, I think this is an awesome idea. The only "main" Fedora event in the year is Flock, but there are other regional events, like DevConf.IN for example. I think we can do this for the digital resource pack.

I think there is enough lead time to coordinate. Are you looking for someone with a specific background (e.g. a student contributor) or only to get a general overview of the Fedora community?

I think a student contributor would be apt, what do you say?

We should be able to find someone. Let's follow up on this after the acceptance deadline.

@orionstar25 are you the only speaker or are there other people that will be speaking?

@orionstar25 are you the only speaker or are there other people that will be speaking?

@jonatoni, Yes I am the only speaker. Also, I've updated my proposal a bit. Can you go through it once and tell me if it seems fine?

Exhaustive list of various scholarships, awards, conferences, events provided and hosted by Fedora and RedHat. (digitial list works)

We can definitely help you with this - we can create a list with the scholarships, awards and conf/events we are aware of

I'd love to =) Two years ago we created this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig0gnM9jsm0

Some swags, stickers shipped here would be highly appreciated!

Definitely, we will ask you for the address and we can ship some swag.

Btw, do you also need some budget for the event?

I'm +1 for the request. :100: Please let us know if you need any help, I would love to help you  :tada:

For what it's worth, I am also +1 for this ticket.

A resource for scholarships and conferences focused on underrepresented groups can be found here: https://diversitytickets.org/

This is a good place to find data on where Fedora has already been around the world (note you have to look closer to make sure it was an approved event – there is not a great filter): https://pagure.io/mindshare/issues?status=all

Definitely, we will ask you for the address and we can ship some swag.

Once the ticket is formally approved, the next step is to open a fedora-budget ticket using the swag-shipment template.

+1 from me as well. Moving this to approved with three +1s. Thanks.

Due to annual college fest and then ongoing Diwali vacation, the turnout was very poor. We have scheduled it for 4th November now. The presentation and all other arrangements are ready.

@orionstar25 Best luck for the event and please make sure to collect the feedback from the attendees after the event!

The event was held today and was successful. The feedbacks have been recorded in the form provided by @nikhilkathole

Btw, do you also need some budget for the event?

I also had some food items: 55 units of Chips and drinks. Is there any place where I can claim my reimbursement?
