#916 #freetober 2023 badge
Closed: pushed 10 months ago by gui1ty. Opened a year ago by riecatnor.

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
- You participated in #freetober 2023!

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- The Fedora Design Team is working to organize an art challenge for the month of October- branded "#freetober". This idea is based off on the Inktober art challenges that are popular with artists across the world. This badge would be awarded to Fedorans who participate in the challenge

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- Artists/designers

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
- To have fun, be creative, build community

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- Once a year during the month of October

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
- By using free creative software to create art

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
- It would be good to incorporate the Creative Freedom Summit logo somehow or the #freetober logo once we get that complete. It's a work in progress but should be done soon! It should represent an artist somehow- here's some badge art that could be used/remixed:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/nest-badge-artist
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/creative-freedom-summit-2023

Note: I am also proposing this as a content badge, and not an event badge purposefully. We have too many event badges and the activity we want to encourage is to create content

Hey @madelinepeck thanks for working on this!

Your second comment actually highlighted something I was going to mention  It's important to make the graphics simple and easy enough to tell what it is at a small size, because that's usually how folks are viewing the badges.

I think the concept is nice! Here's a few ideas to make it more badge-y and fit in with the guidelines
- Try to make the strokes more similar in weight.. there are a lot of different ones between the speech bubble, panda, marker, and pieces of paper.. If your objects are on the same plane in space, it would make sense that they are similarly weighted in stroke. There are times where we can adjust that depending on the design but for the most part we recommend making things similar stroke. For this design, I think the pandas have a nice weight, so I would decrease on the speech bubble and bump the weight up on the other objects.
- Once you adjust the stroke on the marker you might need to simplify it a little bit- but we can cross that bridge once we get there. Here's an example of the level of detail and style we want for something like this, but probably not so big for this design lol.
- Use Comfortaa for the "2023"- badges is one place we still use that font bc it's so cute and falls in with the badges style.. Plus it adds some nostalgia for an older time in Fedora's aesthetic
- The papers are looking a bit flat and I think it would be nice to give them some perspective. Here's an example of how we've dealt with this sort of thing in the past. (Oh and there is a cute pencil in that design as well to get some reference from)
- The stroke on the purples left arm is looking a little funky- like there are multiple objects layered or something- make sure thats crisp and the stroke is consistent

Hope this helps- ping me on chat when you upload the new design so we can get this pushed out soon!

This looks awesome! Setting to approved, please give award rights to @madelinepeck @ekidney and @riecatnor
