#894 Badge request: New Day, New Cake
Closed: pushed a year ago by nb. Opened 2 years ago by jflory7.

New badge request form

  • Badge name: New Day, New Cake
  • Badge description: You got a fresh slice of cake with the fourth FCA. Meet with the FCA for an in-person or virtual cake and coffee/tea/beverage chat to receive this limited-edition badge.
  • Activities to earn the badge: I would like to deprecate the It's a Cake Thing badge. This effectively resets eligibility on a badge to meet and chat with the current FCA.
  • Who is doing it: The FCA and anyone who has an in-person or virtual A/V meeting with the FCA.
  • Why are they doing it: Two reasons:
    1. For me: It helps me as the current FCA to have a small token for people who have a conversation with me where I get to learn more about them and what they are doing in Fedora.
    2. For the Fedora Community: There is a new incentive to earn a new, limited-edition badge when anyone has a chat with me.
  • When do they do it: Spontaneously often.
  • How do they do it: Have a 1x1 virtual conversation with me, or meet me in person for an extended chat about Fedora.

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

I have two inspirations:

  1. I love coffee cake.
  2. Using the number four ("4") in the badge since I am the fourth FCA and this badge would only be awarded by me. Ideally, a future fifth FCA would request a new badge too.

I am not in a rush for this badge because I have a lot of other things I am working through first before I'd like more people seeking me out for a badge-earning chat. It would be nice to have this badge go live sometime in November.

Love the idea, and I'm already excited to claim it!!
The description of the artwork concept is a very good point to start, make sure the cake looks delicious lol

I updated the badge description to reflect the changed title from FCAIC to FCA. I'm not sure if this changes the scope of the badge being about cake, but maybe we could keep the cake reference as some insider historical knowledge (and because in many cases, I might have coffee and/or cake with someone who would earn this badge).

Another idea for the badge artwork would be to include coffee itself, if that doesn't complicate the artwork too much. I love coffee cake but I also love coffee too, and I used to be a barista in a past life. :smiley: So that could personalize the badge more to me in my role.

i would like to work on this if permitted

No permission required as far as I'm concerned. Take it away! Looking forward to the concept artwork. I'm sure @riecatnor will chime in with some helpful advice.

Hi @dejipot yes feel free to submit a design for this ticket :smile:

Hi @kavyaaaa - thanks for the first draft here! I have some notes for you:
- Make sure to use the template files, found here
- When you upload your latest work to the ticket, make sure to add the SVG and a PNG(this should be 256x256px).. this is for future reference and so that it's easy to review the progress on the ticket

Nice start with the illustration! I have some suggestions for you:
- Right now the coffee cup is all white. So I think you can maybe play with adding colors and maybe some vector objects to show shading on one side of the cup.
- It might be nice to try a coffee mug instead of the to go cup.. this would demonstrate the concept of the badge a bit more (sharing coffee & cake with the Fedora Community Architect, instead of on the go!)
- Both the cup and the cake seem a little bit stiff compared to some of other food related designs.. take a look at these badge designs to get a feel for what we're looking for: 1, 2, 3. 4, 5

Hope this helps. Looking forward to your next draft!

@smeragoel and @riecatnor Thankyou for you review! I made some changes as suggested. Kindly review this.

@jfroy7 @smeragoel and @riecatnor here is my submission for the new cake, new day. Designed this badge while following fedora guildline on inscape

I love these proposed artworks! :heart_eyes: Ultimately, I will let @riecatnor and @smeragoel weigh in here as our resident experts in badge design.

I do like @jhennifer's use of the panda here, because ultimately this badge is about connecting with other people in the community. Coffee and cake are just the medium we use for having that connection. :grinning: But maybe using two pandas, or a panda and a badger, would be better to show two people coming together.

I also can respect that making a badge artwork too complicated can lose the meaning too. So again, I defer to the expertise of @riecatnor and @smeragoel here.

Yes, I do think I would edit the Badger to recreate connecting with other people, and I would make changes to my work. thanks for the feedback.

Hello @smeragoel @riecatnor! Here is my first take on this. Looking forward to feedback on this. I've added two pandas symbolizing the community and a piece of cake and coffee.
new-one.svg

Thanks everyone for your work! Here are some notes:

@kavyaaaa
- I like the illustrations. Maybe add some background because rn it seems like the items are floating in space
- I'd also urge you to try and make it more Fedora-y - Try adding a stroke and using colours from the palette.
- The orange in the background blends in with the illustrations, try another colour!

@dejipot
- Please refrain from changing the badge template. It looks like you exported it with the wrong dimensions and there's something wrong with the shadows too.
- I'd recommend using colours from the Fedora colour palette, along with thicker strokes to make it more Fedora-y.
- The text is to small to be legible. Maybe use a coffee been to indicate a coffee cup!

@jhennifer
- I like the idea, it looks like the panda is really enjoying the food!
- Maybe try extending @jflory7's idea to incorporate a community connection between two pandas? That's be interesting to see :)

@meghasharma
- Please post SVGs and PNGs together when submitting an artwork, it makes it easier to review!
- The pandas are too small in size wrt to the food items
- The illustration styles of the cake, coffee, pandas and plate are very different. Try to make it cohesive, using similar colours, strokes and shadow styles

Looking forward to the revisions!

Hi @smeragoel @riecatnor. I worked upon the feedback and iterated on the design. I've increased size of pandas and and tried to make the art style more cohesive using similar color palette, art style and strokes. Looking forward to feedback to improve it more if any.

Hey folks, looks like I missed this one in the last round of reviews. Before I jump into individual reviews, I was looking through the badges explore page, and found this badge. I think this could be perfectly adapted for the concept if you are looking to portray two characters interacting. I think that a nicely designed and centered coffee and cake would also be a great way to solve this artistic challenge, so using the badge I referenced isn't required.

Here's some feedback for your designs:

Hi @dejipot this a good next step! I like how you've used designs from previous badges. Here are my notes:
- There are a lot of elements, and it is making it kind of confusing and cluttered. I think if you want to go for a full illustration, that would be okay, but the elements are not looking cohesive right now. Some have stroke, some don't. Some look more realistic, some more cartoonish. Consistency and simplicity is key. Remember these are being viewed at a small size and the concept and art should be easily readable. Take a look at the badge art I referenced above, this could be adapted for your work
- There is a lack of contrast for the elements on the table, they are blending together. Make sure to focus on choosing colors that help the readability of the design
- The badge is missing some pieces, I think. There should be a stroke, and also a white belly
- Make sure you are using stroke consistently across the design. Whether its not being used, its thin, or thick, each object should have similar weights of stroke

@meghasharma this is nicely simple! Here's my feedback:
- The pandas feel kind of out of place, like they are floating (ghost pandas? :smile:). I would try to anchor them, with a table, or maybe make them bigger and crop them using the clip tool?
- The cake and coffee are nicely simple, but a bit cramped to make out the details you have added. The layers of your cake are blending together. The cherry on top is tiny! Add some more space in to the layers of the cake, and increase the size of that cherry
- The coffee cup feels flat compared to the other elements, and especially next to the cake which you've given dimensions. I would illustrate it in a similar way to the cake, showing the top rim of the cup, and maybe showing some coffee inside
- Make sure the stroke you are using is consistently size throughout. Like I said in my comment above, if a stroke is not being used, is thin (1.5px minimum), or thick, it should be consistent throughout.

@jhennifer that cake is looking tasty! Some notes for you:
- There is a LOT going on this badge. I think right now it is feeling clutter, and there are so many colors and textures going on. Work on simplifying this. Reading through my notes for the other designs will be helpful.
- Make sure you are using consistent strokes throughout. The pandas have huge strokes on them, the coffee cup and cake have almost none in places.
- The poses of the pandas aren't quite fitting with the concept of this badge. I think they are from a previous badge design, which is good, but it would need to be edited to fit this badge idea. Take a look at the art in my general feedback at the top of this comment. Those would be a good fit
- Make sure to keep it simple, and keep it contrasty. The cup is blending into the blue of the panda and the cake. You could make that one a light blue, or maybe purple (Fedora colors
- The background is WHOA, and is really sticking out to me. I think it would make more sense to have a soothing background and let the other elements stick out. Maybe just go with blues?
- Since this is a "Miscellaneous" badge, it should have a dark blue ring

Looking forward to your next drafts!

Hey folks, thanks for the updated designs, feedback below :100:

@dejipot nice improvement here! Notes for you:
- I think the "coffee2" version is a better fit for the concept, let's move forward with that design. My feedback will be focused on that version.
- The blue panda is sticking out a bit because it is not in one of the Fedora colors, I would make that one have the same colors as this badge.
- I think it would be better to pose one of the pandas arm in the middle down, right now it looks like they are holding hands
- I checked out the svg for this design, and noticed there is a filter on the table, and it is a bit transparent (you can see the pandas through the table). I would suggest removing the filter and finding suitable colors in the various palettes available to you
- I also noticed that the vectors for the coffee/cake are a bit complex, try to simplify those. This means: minimal nodes to achieve the desired shape, and as little objects as possible

@meghasharma these options are looking closer to the badges style :thumbsup: nice job. Notes for you:
- I think you might be having issues with the template.. make sure to us the template as is, making no changes to the sizing, only additions to the grey part of the template.
- I like both options, each for different reasons, but I am curious which one you like more?
- For the cake/coffee only concept, I think you are getting close, but they are still feeling a bit stiff. Maybe it would be good to take a look at other food related badge designs to get some inspiration. Check out these: 1, 2, 3, 4. Trying adding in some shapes or gradients to imply depth, your lines are very straight on the cake, maybe add in some small variations on your vector lines to make it feel a bit more natural.
- The coffee cup looks full to the brim! I would make it the same color as the cup, and maybe add a small ellipse to show there is coffee in the cup
- For the concept with the pandas, I think the stiffness of the food stuff is less obvious bc that is not the main focus of the design, but if you make improvements on those, you can import them into this design as well.
- I would suggest a different color for the table, the green seems a bit off with the color palette for this design. Maybe a blue? This will need some experimentation
- The panda on the right needs some edits as the right side is going inwards, instead of outwards like a fluffy panda :panda_face: and the arm looks very big compared to the arm, as well as the proportions of the other panda

@jhennifer nice improvements, as well, you are getting a better handle on the badge aesthetic :smile: Notes for you:
- I prefer the design without the sun burst in it. Let's move forward with that one
- I like the shadows on the table, nice job!
- I think there is still some blending going on with the cake and coffee cup. I would try a lighter purple for the coffee cup, and imply some depth (right now it looks like there is coffee to the brim!). The blue on the cake is very dark, maybe try a lighter blue for that?
- I think you may need to increase the stroke a bit on the food elements(cake, plate, cup, and also table)? is it 1.5 pixel or more? that might be contributing to the blending of elements
- The pandas look good, but they are very close to the edges of the design area, and getting clipped a little bit. I'd move them in a bit closer, and either change their poses so they don't touch in the middle, or reduce their size if necessary
- The blue background is an improvement, though I think it could be a bit lighter to help the other elements stand out more

Looking forward to your next drafts!

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel! I've worked upon the feedback received by Marie and attaching the improved badge design.
- let me know if the issue still persists with template, I'm exporting as it is from the resources, let me know if it's fixed now.
- I've again attached both the versions, though myself I'd prefer more of just the cake and the coffee, the panda version makes it seem like too much is going on.
- I've played with depth and colors more this time for both coffee cup and cake and worked upon the feedback Marie provided.
- tried blue gradient for table since it goes with the template instead of brown.
- I've also adjusted the panda and changed their color.

Let me know if this can be done or further changes are required. Looking forward to feedback!

@dejipot:
- I think the pandas are closer to what we want, so we can focus on improving the food items for the next version
- the coffee cup and the pandas are the same colour lol, I think we should change the cup color to one of the other colors from the palette
- there seems to be a vertical brown strip at the pointy end of the cake, it looks a bit off.
- Instead of two cherries, let's have one bigger cherry for more clarity
- the plate and cake are blending in, let's change the plate colour
- We can also reduce the layers in the cake as the smalls details are adding a lot of visual noise

@meghasharma:
- nice improvements on the food items!
- the perspective of the cake slice looks a bit off. It's hard to explain in text lol but the front part looks like you are looking at the cake head on whereas the icing part is more of a top down angle. I'd suggest looking at reference images of cake slices :)
- The bean illustration on the cup can be increased in size. We can also do away with it completely if it looks too cluttered
- The panda hands can be modified a bit. Look through past reviews, riecatnor left a similar review for a similar designs

@jhennifer:
- Great job, I like it!
- I think the pandas are a bit too small, especially compared to the food items. Play around with the sizing and placement of the elements.
- I think we should try a lighter colour for the cup. The coffee and the cup are blending in a bit.

Looking forward to your next drafts!

Mistake***

Hello @riecatnor @smeragoel, I've worked on your feedback,
I changed the color of the cup and I also made a different cup version
I also resized the pandas and the food items.

Here are the different variations:

This is one with a glass mug with and without the fedora logo

Here's a variation with a lighter-colored cup as suggested:

Hi, this is my idea for the badge, it's not perfect, but it seems to me that it's harmonious in color, I await your comments.

@riecatnor can you please review? I'd like to push this badge before Flock if possible.

Looks good to me, let's get it pushed!
