#825 Dumpster Firefighter
Opened 2 years ago by nb. Modified 10 months ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
- Dumpster Firefighter

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- This badge is for the people who helped us navigate the dumpster fire called leaving freenode and moving to Libera.Chat

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- The IRC team

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
- Because we were moving from freenode to Libera.Chat and it was a dumpster fire.

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- Hopefully only once

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
- See above

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
- A panda dressed as a firefighter pointing a fire hose at a dumpster fire (the dumpster fire could have a # symbol in the flames)

I agree with 1) your general assessment of the situation and 2) giving people a badge. On second thought, can we give it a slightly less negative name? Even if the art suggestion stays? :)

Also, in addition to the IRC team (who definitely deserve it -- thanks everyone!) it'd be nice to include people who help us go through and update the docs and wiki, a big task still ahead of us.

Ok, yeah, we can change the name, although I really like the art suggestion. Sure we can give it to people that help with docs too.

I would like to work on this issue :) @smeragoel @riecatnor

Hi @harshita12 great, I look forward to your first draft :)

Hi, @riecatnor @smeragoel @nb I'd like to give this issue a try :)

Hi @bhavya-verma thanks for starting work here! Some recommendations:
- The design is very busy right now and uses a lot of colors- I would suggest simplifying. For example, make the dumpster just one color and give it a stroke.
- The fire is looking pretty good, but I would either add a stroke to each layer (making sure they are pretty thick, 1.5px or more) or remove them entirely
- I like your fireman outfit, but since it is so small it is a bit confusing to look at. I think this is art from the outreachy "you can do it!" badge? it works there because that takes up the entirety of the badge design. Give it a simple firemans coat.
-T he hat is cute, but the ears are look a bit awkward in combination.. maybe try adjust them or the hat- I would either remove the little yellow object you have in there or make it bigger
- I understand your choice of background, orange to say fire! but I think it is blends with the fire and the fireman- maybe try using a contrasting color like blue or even grays
- I see the firepanda is pointing a hose, but it seemed to disappear ;) I would continue the hose on the left side over the panda shoulder.
Let's see how it goes with these changes and go from there :) good luck!

Hi folks - thanks for working here, notes below!

@bhavya-verma nice improvements!
- I think things are still blending together a good deal. I am not sure the background shade of blue is working, trying a couple colors for that.
- I think you can remove the "#", I don't think its needed to get the concept across and it is making things busier
- I see you are using a drop shadow on the panda, I would suggest removing that. I also see that the edges on the shirt and on the yellow stripe look rough rather than smooth- make sure you are making smooth lines in your design, remember we are keeping things simple

Hi @designstacks
- Make sure to upload and SVG and PNG to the ticket so we can review easily
- I see you have made some changes to the badge template, make sure you use that without editing the original template
- I would suggest making some simplifications to the design as these are being viewed at a small size
- You have a lot of empty space at the top of the design, I would suggest reworking the composition to use that space
- Remember to use strokes that are 1.5 or more
- Make sure your art stays inside the badge art area, use the clip tool if needed

Looking forward to the next drafts!

Hello @riecatnor, thanks for the feedback. Please I don't understand what you meant in the 3rd comment. Could you please explain better what you meant there?

Hey @riecatnor, catching up on the old tickets after a long time... Would appreciate your feedback on the designs. 😊

Hey @bhavya-verma thanks for following up here- I've had a busy couple weeks so thank you for your patience.

I think the options you have here https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/825#comment-792524 have come a long way from your starting point, nice job  I think this one is the best one to keep working with: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/raw/files/ea7c8599c9d9dc89e2484b70c6f64245ed26f7db3368ce458764597d976d6845-Dark_Blue.png

I have some feedback for you to make this even more Fedora Badge-y:
- If we're going to skip the patterned background, let's do a simple illustration instead of the linear black/blue/white gradient. I think you could put in a grey "ground" and then use a radial gradient for the background- you might use yellow/orange/red/dark grey? It would be nice to push the fire feeling further
- I would suggest simplifying the fire part of the graphic- here is a nice reference to help you: https://www.vecteezy.com/vector-art/7802021-cute-fire-illustration-design
- I see there is a black stroke on some parts of the panda- we try to avoid using black in badge design, with some exceptions.. but I would suggest using a dark blue stroke for the panda, that will probably do the job
- Since this is a very one-off sort of badge, let's change the outer ring color to the dark blue Miscellaneous category

Looking forward to your next draft
