#769 Idea: "Participated in a Test Day" Series of Badges
Closed: duplicate a year ago by riecatnor. Opened 3 years ago by coremodule.

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
-You participated in a test day! You participated in 3 test days! You participated in 5 test days! You participated in 10 test days! You participated in 25 test days!

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

I'm not certain if I can request a series of badges, or if each badge should be it's own pagure ticket, I'm happy to make the new tickets if need be. My idea here is to promote and reward the Fedora users who participate in Fedora QA testdays. We have Heroes of Fedora at the end of each release to celebrate those users who engaged in a lot of validation test/bug reports, but we have no recognition method for test days. I think it would be beneficial to Fedora as a whole to recognize these folks too. We have several different badges that a part of a series (I'm thinking specifically of the kernel regression testing badges or the wiki editor badges) that offer users more badges for more testing/editing/etc. I would like to see these issued in that same way: if a user attends more than one test day, they are recognized for that.

1) What are those activities?
-Participating in Fedora QA-organized test days

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
-General QA userbase, could be newcomers or veterans of Fedora

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
-They are participating in the test days to help find bugs/flaws/general problems with a specific component in Fedora, for example Btrfs by default: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2020-07-08_Btrfs_default?rd=Test_Day:F33_btrfs_by_default_2020-07-08

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
-To provide Fedora with a broader scope regarding it's quality and depth of testing

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
-It is usually by installing a component and then running said component, but this could be through the GUI or the TUI. It just depends on the specific case.

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
-I don't know how exactly to bring this concept to life... perhaps a sun to indicate day, and... ?

@camiarias Please let me know how I can help! I'm not an artist or designer, but I'll do what I can to help!

Hi @ooree I am unclear what concept you are going for with this, can you clarify? The colors are all blending together, I would suggest adding in some contrast to begin :)

EDIT: Re-uploading SVGs with correct dimensions

Hello @riecatnor I apologise for just getting back to you. Finally finished my finals about an hour ago, I'll work on the backgroundcontrast. The conceptis the panda is holding holding a spanner with a check Mark on top of it to show they "did" the eat day. The varying items, balloon, cake, and tiara are rewards

Hello @camiarias @coremodule , this looks super good, welldone @camiarias ,

I totally support this initiative. Fedora Test-days are announced in lists, fedora magazine, blogs, everywhere, to reach everyone, so I think it is nice to award people who show up and contribute to this tests, especially in a regular way.

Hello. Can I work on this? I have some fresh ideas for this.

These are my drafts. Please, let me know what you think. Thank you

Hi Marie, I uploaded some drafts for this issue. Please could you check
them out and let me know what you think of them. Thanks.

Also, I have a question, do I send the drafts to you via email before
posting them on the issue page?

Hi, @riecatnor I did more drafts...I hope they are not too much...This is me trying to provide more options. I am eager to know what you think of them and make corrections where necessary

HI @quintessential thanks for starting work on this! I am going to review the work in the most recent comment [0].

  1. Make sure you are using the badge templates and make no changes to the art in that template file. You should just be making additions.
  2. I am not sure what the concept is behind the elements you have shown. Since it is for participating in a test day (looking for bugs) what if you simplified the design? You could have just one bug with a magnifying glass, and then add more and more bugs for the higher number badge design. There is a design in a previous comment that you could work with [1] . I think you can remove the badger/panda and still get the concept across very well.
  3. The artwork for this ticket has been marked as needs improvement, and I think that is because the lady bug isn't fitting well into the badges aesthetic... we don't use a lot of that bright red for badge unless it is really working int he design.. maybe try to create a different bug design
  4. Remember that badges are viewed at a pretty small size. Because of that we want to make sure the design is very simple and clear.. I would suggest changing the color of your numbers, as red on green is hard to read

Looking forward to your next draft!

I'll work on the badges right away. Thank you for the reviews

Hi @riecatnor I worked on the badges again. What do you think?

Hi @quintessential, thank you for your work. I think the badge seems more relevant to the issue now, but there are still a couple of things we can work on:

  • The bugs still don't seem like they fit the badge aesthetic. You can try different bugs with different colours (see: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/769#comment-698985)

  • The number of bugs on the badge doesn't have to correspond to the badge number. Since badges are small, any small scale design elements won't be legible. Try reducing the number and increasing the size of the bugs.

  • All the bugs are of the same size, colour and orientation. Maybe some bugs can be bigger and some smaller, in different directions? Try mixing it up!

  • The magnifying glass also seems very flat at the moment and does not fit the badge aesthetic. Try adding an outline, maybe?

  • The numbers are too close to the badge outline and seem to be of different sizes for different badges. A more uniform style would look better!

  • As @riecatnor mentioned, this issue is tagged 'artwork-needs-improvement' because the ladybugs on this ticket: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/769#comment-698985 don't match the badge aesthetic. I'd suggest you use this badge as a starting point and focus on improving the design of the ladybug. You are free to work from scratch, of course, but it saves time and effort when we continue where the last person dropped off :)

I am looking forward to the next version!

Thank you so much @riecatnor @smeragoel for the reviews. You make it really easy to work with you. I'll work on a better version right away.

Hello, @riecatnor @smeragoel I worked on the designs again. I hope it paints the right picture. I wasn't sure if you needed me to add different colors of bugs. What do you think about this version?

I was thinking, what if we just change the numbers without increasing the number of bugs? Maybe, that could work. What are your thoughts about this?

HI @quintessential thanks for your work here, nice improvements :) some notes for you:
- Yes, I think we can leave the art the same even with the number changes. We try to create unique art for each badge, but sometime it can be a challenge and we leave it the same.
- I would suggest simplifying your lady bug design. Reduce the number of spots. Make the arms bigger in width (you can increase your stroke if you are using one, or add one on). Since we are considering keeping the art the same, I think you could increase the size of both the magnifying glass and the bug just a bit.
- The background is focused on the number right now, bringing more attention to that then the ladybug in the middle. I would bring the middle of the "rays" behind your ladybug
- I would play around with colors for the magnifying glass, keep in mind the recommended minimum stroke is 1.5 pixels, so I think you can increase that a bit as well. Maybe try some of the grays from the fedora palette
Looking forward to your next draft!

@riecatnor @smeragoel Thank you for guiding me through so far

I made some changes to the badge. I also chose the color of the magnifying glass to be blue which is the signature color of Fedora.

What do you think about this design?

Hi @quintessential nice improvements! Some notes for you:
- I think you can simplify your lady bug some more.. we want to make to take a very simple graphic approach. I think you can remove the gradient, the drop shadow, and the white background. Add a consistent stroke to the lady bug elements. Take a look at these other critters in badge designs for inspiration:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/parselmouth-ii
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/baby-badger
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/web-warrior
- I think I like the blue better than the green. I would suggest adding a stroke, maybe there is a small one there now? but I think you can make the inside a light blue, and the stroke a dark blue- make sure to increase the stroke to at least 1.5 or omit it entirely.
- The background rays look like have been dimmed compared to the backgrounds used in badges, maybe increase the opacity on those a bit.. Also depending on how the ladybug looks against this color, you might consider trying a different color than purple?
- I would play around with the colors you are using for the numbering, maybe try a darker color on the outside and white in the middle?
- I would center the numbering for each design, I see you are leaving space for two numbers in the "1" and "5" version, but they look too close to your magnifying glass
Looking forward to the next draft!

@quintessential:
- Right now, the magnifying glass is taking away most of the focus. I'd say- reduce the handle size, and increase the size of the lens.
- The lady big still doesn't match the badge aesthetic. Add some strokes, and use bolder colours. You can look at other badges for reference. For example:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/taming-the-beasts
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/vacation
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/party-pirate
- There's some awkward spacing between the numbers and also around it. Look at how other badges use numbers and take inspiration from that!

Hello, @riecatnor @smeragoel Thanks for your patience, reviews, and recommendations so far

  • About Marie's @riecatnor comment on the use of red in badges, https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/769#comment-790025, I'm not sure but I think this works.

  • I also changed the direction of the overall design, making it simple as I could. I think it gives it a different look.

  • I hope I got the numbering this time @smeragoel

  • I'm not sure if that's the perfect position for the numbering though

I look forward to your reviews. Thank you!
